Cast Aside Productions has announced the inaugural winners of the CAP Awards for Excellence in Maine's High School Musical Theater.

"I saw remarkable talent, drive, and focus from students this year," reported CAP Executive Director Celeste Green. "The future of musical theater in Maine is in great hands!"

Founded for the 2017/18 school year, the mission of the CAP Awards is to bring much needed recognition to the hard work being done in the field of Musical Theater at the school level in Maine.

Nominated productions were categorized in classes based on the shows' reported budgets, in an effort to account for some districts' limited arts funding. 5 Cast Aside Productions adjudicators visited the schools performances, independently evaluating the production and participants. The level of student involvement is heavily considered-especially in non-performative roles such as tech and design departments, with categories celebrating aspects such as Best Crew and Best Pit.

CAP Artistic Director David Surkin advocates for the celebration of these productions and their participants: "It's easy to underestimate a high school musical, and the very concept sounds like a punchline. The reality is: the shows being created in these schools can rival the quality of the most established theaters."

Cast Aside Productions is now accepting submissions for the 2018/19 CAP Awards. Visit castasideproductions.com for more details.
