Acorn Acting Academy To Offer Free Audience Participation Improv Comedy Night 9/17

The Acorn Acting Academy kicks off a fall series of events in the new Acorn Studio Theater with a free night of improvisational comedy featuring members of Acorn’s Shakespeare Ensemble showcasing another side of their talents.  The evening begins at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, September 17th with a ½ hour set of traditional favorites performed by Acorn’s Producing Director Michael Levine and actors Keith Anctil, Stephanie Ross and Laura Graham. Following this set, audience members will be invited to replace members of the company on stage during the next hour of material, providing for a constantly changing repertoire of performers.  This participation, however, will be purely voluntary as no one will be asked to come up on stage unless they volunteer.  The event is designed to provide a fun forum for interested members of the community to see Acorn’s new theater space and meet members of Acorn's teaching faculty, as three out of the company’s four teachers will be performing.  Seating is first-come, first-serve and no reservations will be taken.

The Acorn Acting Academy begins it fall semester of classes the week of September 21st, and the Improv Comedy night is only the first event of a busy year for the new Studio Theater, which will open officially the following weekend with a production of “I Fall for You,” a series of 7 short plays by Michael Kimball about love and relationships.  The programs will continue with the resumption of Acorn’s “Second Friday” series in October, a student showcase night in November and a new Children’s Theater series beginning in the winter.  Additionally, Acorn will host a number of events by other producers over the course of the season.

“We are thrilled to make this new theater space available for the community,” says Levine, “Space has been hard to come by in recent years, and now theater artists have an Off-Off Broadway style black box in which to hone their craft.”  While only 40 seats, the theater offers producers a fairly large stage and high ceilings, allowing for fairly effective lighting and staging possibilities.  The space is for rent for $100 a night; interested theater artists should contact Acorn Productions at 854-0065.
