Walden Theatre Presents WAITING FOR LEFTY, 2/24-3/5

By:

Walden Theatre announces the production Waiting for Lefty by Clifford Odets and a special presentation of the Orson Welles radio play His Honor the Mayor. Both plays are directed by Lucas Adams, who returns to Walden Theatre after directing the 2010 Young Playwrights Festival.

Waiting for Lefty unfolds as a series of vignettes framed by a meeting of taxi drivers debating whether or not to go on strike. Developed during the Great Depression, it explores issues like the trust--and distrust--of big business and the moral quandaries that workers confronted in the 1930s.

His Honor the Mayor was written as part of a series about Americans' basic liberties that was presented on CBS in the early 1940s. This particular script deals dramatically with the 1st Amendment right to freedom of expression, and how the protection of this right, on the community level, can prove more tricky than it seems.

"Through the characters and relationships in both of these plays," said director Lucas Adams, "we are given a stark reminder that the we must not be passive, we must fight for everything we hold dear; that the world, as one character in Lefty states, 'is supposed to be for all of us.'"
