The Kentucky Center Presents The Gheens Great Expectations Concert With The Louisville Orchestra, Louisville Youth Orchestra And Nicholas Recktenwald The Gheens Great Expectations concert is part of The Kentucky Center's Gheens Great Expectations Program. This program brings some of the world's finest young classical musicians and dancers to Louisville for performances and residencies that focus on engaging and inspiring youth. The program aims to help the community's youth encounter transformative experiences through the arts.

The Gheens Great Expectations Concert will feature a side-by-side performance with trumpeter Nicholas Recktenwald and the Louisville Orchestra and Louisville Youth Orchestra conducted by Doug Elmore, as well as a performance by Gheens artist Spur of the Moment Jazz Quintet. The program will include works by Artur Marquez, Dizzy Gillespie and Modest Mussorgsky.

Versatile trumpeter Nicholas Recktenwald, a student at duPont Manual High School's Youth Performing Arts School, is a Gheens artist who is also a member of the National Youth Orchestra. Nicholas' father, James Recktenwald, holds the Lynne A. Redgrave Chair as Assistant Principal Trumpet with the Louisville Orchestra. This concert provides a unique opportunity to watch the father-son duo perform together.

In a special feature, the concert will also include a performance of Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition, with the projection of images of the winning art work from the statewide Musical Inspirations Art Contest. Much like Mussorgky's music was inspired by art, the student art will be inspired by Mussorgky's music. The art work will also be featured in a special exhibit in the Mary Anderson Room at The Kentucky Center immediately following the concert.

The mission of The Kentucky Center for the Performing Arts is to lead and enrich the artistic, educational and economic vitality of the region by providing unparalleled programming and cultural events. As an integral member of the Kentucky Tourism, Arts, and Heritage cabinet, The Center, along with the other agencies, seek to preserve and promote the history, heritage and arts of the Commonwealth.

The vision of the Gheens Foundation, Inc. is to represent Edwin and Mary Jo Gheens in a manner that brings credit to their legacy. We will be mindful of the responsibilities to our communities as the area's second largest independent foundation. We will be distinguished by addressing the ongoing needs of the Metropolitan Louisville, Kentucky area and Lafourche and Terrebonne Parishes in Louisiana while pro-actively seeking new and creative ways to have profound, long-term impact on a few selected projects in chosen fields of focus. This will be done while managing the foundation's assets in a manner to assure long term viability.
