Ma Rainey's Black Bottom, the third play in August Wilson's ten-play "American Century Cycle," is the seventh production in the series to be directed by Gregg T. Daniel for A Noise Within. Set in 1927 in a rundown Chicago recording studio, the play follows Ma Rainey as she fights to retain control of her music, while her ambitious trumpeter, Levee, reaches for opportunity in a world determined to hold him back. Against a backdrop of racism and inequity, Wilson's drama illuminates the struggle to claim dignity, voice, and self-worth.
