Hope vs. Life posits Life as a boxing match. The young woman at its center, aptly named Hope Armstrong, is confronted with round after round of challenges: As a girl, she has to contend with a loss of priority when her kid brother is born and she’s no longer an only child. As a student, she has to contend with the Mean Girls at school. She becomes her kid brother’s protector. As a teenager, she is obsessed with boys. She deals with teen pregnancy, single motherhood, racism, an abusive boyfriend, economic struggles to support her kids, and the harshest blow of all: when the person she loves most in the world dies.
How many punishing blows can Hope take from Life? Will Hope hit the mat, pummeled into defeat? Or can she still prevail with a shining victory?
Written and performed by Des Bailey. Directed by Jessica Lynn Johnson.
