Acquaprofonda, Italian for "deep water," is a half-hour family opera sung in English with supertitles, with music by Giovanni Sollima and libretto by Giancarlo De Cataldo, translated into English by Elle Moody. The story follows Serena, a fearless girl who lives by the sea, as she discovers a whale sick from plastic pollution and, with the help of a wise Old Sailor, inspires her father to stand up against a local factory harming the ocean. Originally commissioned by the Teatro Sociale di Como in co-production with the Teatro dell'Opera di Roma, the production won the Filippo Sienbaneck award for significant initiatives in music education. Long Beach Opera Education presents this return engagement in collaboration with the Aquarium of the Pacific, with performances at noon and 3:00 PM on each date.
