Zakir Hussain's Masters of Percussion Return to Walt Disney Concert Hall, 3/21

Classical tabla virtuoso Zakir Hussain returns to Walt Disney Concert Hall on Wednesday, March 21, 2012 at 8 PM, as part of the Los Angeles Philharmonic Association's 2011/12 World Music Series. Hussain is joined by Masters of Percussion, an ensemble of leading percussion artists, the Meitei Pung Cholom Performing Troupe which combines dance, drumming and martial arts, and special guest, kathak dancer, Antonia Minnecola.

Hussain is highly regarded in the percussion world as a leader in the world music movement. A child prodigy and the gifted son of tabla legend Ustad Alla Rakha, Hussain has been touring since the age of 12. Hussain's tabla playing is marked by uncanny intuition and masterful improvisational dexterity, founded in formidable knowledge and study.  

Widely considered a chief architect of the contemporary world music movement, Hussain has collaborated with many leading musicians and ensembles including including Shakti, which he founded with John McLaughlin and L. Shankar, Remember Shakti, the Diga Rhythm Band, Making Music, Planet Drum with Mickey Hart, Tabla Beat Science, and Sangam with Charles Lloyd and Eric Harland. In 1992, his albumPlanet Drum, co-created and produced with Mickey Hart, received a Grammy award for Best World Music Album. 

Hussain has recorded and performed with artists as diverse as George Harrison, Yo-Yo Ma, Joe Henderson, Van Morrison, Airto Moreira, Pharoah Sanders, Billy Cobham, Mark Morris, Herbie Hancock, Rennie Harris, and the Kodo drummers. His 2009 recording with frequent collaborators and trio-mates Bela Fleck and Edgar MeyerThe Melody of Rhythm, was nominated for a Grammy.
