Sinkane Set for Skirball Cultural Center's Sunset Concerts Series, 7/28

By:

The Sudanese American multi-instrumentalist Sinkane will perform at the Skirball Cultural Center on Thursday, July 28, at 8:00 p.m. as part of the Sunset Concerts series. AhmEd Gallad, who goes by the stage name Sinkane, will be previewing new songs from his upcoming 2017 release as well as material from his extensive back catalogue. Songhoy Blues, who were originally scheduled to perform Sunset Concerts on July 28, had to cancel their appearance for medical reasons.

Sinkane is a Brooklyn-based solo recording artist who blends krautrock, free jazz, and funk rock with Sudanense pop. Born in London, Sinkane spent his early childhood in Sudan, followed by Ohio after his family fled to the United States. In 2014, he released his most recent album, Mean Love, which featured special guests David Byrne, members of LCD Soundsystem, and Money Mark. Prior to becoming a solo artist, Sinkane performed and toured with Caribou, Of Montreal, and Yeasayer.

Marking its twentieth anniversary season in 2016, the Skirball's free summertime music series, Sunset Concerts, features an eclectic mix of traditions and styles. The six Thursday evenings (July 21 - August 25) are presented free of charge in the Skirball's picturesque central courtyard, where music fans of all ages sing along, dance in the aisles, and gather at the foot of the stage. A popular choice for a group outing, family-friendly fun, or romantic date night, Sunset Concerts invite Angelenos and out-of-towners alike to dine al fresco, visit the Museum galleries, and explore the Skirball's distinctive architecture and hillside setting.

The full schedule of the 2016 Sunset Concerts is as follows: Thao & the Get Down Stay Down (July 21); Sinkane (July 28); Thalma de Freitas (August 4); M.A.K.U. Soundsystem (August 11); the L.A. debut of Music Maker Blues Revue (August 18); and Shai Tsabari and the Middle East Groove All Stars (August 25). All concerts begin at 8:00 p.m.; doors open at 7:00 p.m.
