Set in 1953, The Solid Gold Cadillac begins at the annual stockholders' meeting of General Products, a colossal manufacturing corporation. Just as the company directors are about to vote themselves large promotions and even larger raises, Laura Partridge, an older woman who owns a measly ten shares in the company stands up to question their actions. Flustered by the first person who ever dared to stand up to them and hoping to keep her quiet, the directors offer her a job in the company. As she takes to the position with a passion, financial indiscretions are exposed, office romance flourishes and the little old lady makes an impression on big corporate American they'll never forget. Written by legendary George S. Kaufman and Howard Teichmann, The Solid Gold Cadillac has delighted audiences since its hugely successful run in the 1950's on Broadway and in its film version, starring Judy Holliday; but with its themes of corporate greed and executive excess seemingly ripped from today's news headlines, never has the play been so amusing nor so relevant.
