PIECE OF MY HEART to Open at The Grove Theatre, 7/5

By:

The Grove Theatre announces the opening of A Piece of My Heart* on July 5th. Most histories of the Vietnam War say little about the women who served as nurses, Red Cross workers, and entertainers. A Piece of My Heart is a powerful, true drama about six women who went to Vietnam: five nurses and a country western singer booked by an unscrupulous agent to entertain the troops. The play portrays each young woman before, during, and after her tour in the war-torn nation and ends as each leaves a personal token at the memorial wall in Washington.

The play follows such stories as an inexperienced nursing supervisor thrown into a mass casualty situation; an analyst whose report is ignored because she's a woman and not high enough on the chain of command; the woman who needs to "build a psychological wall" so the stresses of the job don't destroy her; and the momentary joys of drinking, smoking pot and attending a Bob Hope Christmas show. The postwar experiences echo the better-known problems of male veterans, including post-traumatic stress disorder and lingering illness from exposure to Agent Orange.

A Piece of My Heart premiered in New York at Manhattan Theatre Club, and now has enjoyed over 1000 productions internationally. It was recently named "The most enduring play on Vietnam in the nation," by The Vietnam Vets Association.

"There have been a number of plays dealing with Viet Nam, but none with the direct, emotional impact of Ms. Lauro's work. -The New York Times

Brought [the audience] to tears...and a standing ovation." - Variety

"A riveting, rending dramatic experience." - Louisville Courier Journal
