Original Art by Banksy, Basquiat, Warhol and Trump Up for Auction in L.A.

Julien's Auctions, the world record-breaking auction house, has announced the fall edition of its biannual Street, Contemporary & Celebrity Art auction featuring an unprecedented canvas of works by some of the most important and groundbreaking contemporary and street artists of our time including Banksy, Jean Michel Basquiat, Keith Haring, Invader, Alec Monopoly, Andy Warhol, Mr. Brainwash, STIK, Timothy White, Alex Katz and more.

For the first time, a selection of works created by celebrities not known for their artistic expressions in painting and drawing will also be presented featuring original artwork by Tony Curtis, Phyllis Diller and President Donald Trump (shown in photo above, left).

The art auction event of the season takes place on Thursday, October 19, 2017 at their pop up auction gallery 805 North La Cienega Blvd., Los Angeles, CA and live online with 156 lots featured.

Andy Warhol's screen print portrait "Michael Jackson" (1984) is one of the showpieces of this collection. The King of Pop Art's tribute to the King of Pop depicts a smiling Jackson (shown left) at the height of his fame wearing his signature Thriller style jacket with Warhol's signature iconography of the famous and infamous celebrities he painted. The piece originated when Warhol was commissioned by Time magazine to create the cover for their March 19, 1984 issue. The screen print stamped with The Estate of Andy Warhol and The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts Inc. is estimated at $100,000 -$150,000. Street art agent provocateur Banksy is here with three of his most known politically satirical works in the world. "Drill Rat" (2003) (shown in photo left), "Uncut Sheet Di-Faced Tenners" (2004) and "Gold Flag (Signed)" (2007) all display the notorious anonymous artist's trademark of social commentary, street sign alterations and subversive acts of guerilla artistry in his stenciled graffiti and installation works. His recurring rat character as "Drill Rat" is spray-painted and stenciled on a Diverted Traffic London sign with a pre-sale estimate of $70,000 - $90,000. In 2004 during his ATM installation, the artist printed his own fake currency by altering ten-pound notes substituting Queen Elizabeth's face with that of Princess Diana as well as featuring the words "Banksy of England." The limited in edition bills caused a spectacle when they were dropped into a crowd at the 2004 Notting Hill Carnival and later that year at The Reading Festival and were shown in the Banksy documentary Exit Through the Gift Shop. "Uncut Sheet Di-Faced Tenners" is one of Banksy's most highly collectible pieces estimated at $30,000 -$35,000. The final incarnation of Banksy's Flags series is the gold edition that was available only to buyers who attended the 2007 Santa's Ghetto in Bethlehem exhibition. The piece is a caricature of the iconic World War II image, depicting U.S. soldiers raising the American flag during the battle of Iwo Jima. "Gold Flag (Signed)" is one of 112 limited editions signed by the artist and is estimated at $15,000 - $25,000. Other highlights of this collection include "Jean Michel Basquiat, Portrait," a self-portrait of the iconic graffiti artist created in marker on paper (estimate: $40,000 - $60,000) (shown right); celebrity portrait photographer Timothy White's photograph "Elizabeth Taylor," a black and white mural print of the screen legend flipping off the camera (estimate: $35,000 - $45,000); renowned graffiti artist Alec Monopoly's enhanced stainless Milgauss Oyster Perpetual Rolex Wristwatch (estimate: $25,000-$35,000) (shown left); five original Space Invader mosaics by the French street artist Invader including PA-1082 (estimate: $50,000 - $70,000), PA-1039 Pink Panther (estimate: $50,000-$70,000), PA-733 Auction (estimate: $10,000 - $15,000), PA-739 (estimate: $20,000 -$30,000) (shown right); Mr. Brainwash's collaborative pieces (each estimated at $15,000 -$20,000), "Al Pacino" (2017) gicleé and hand embellished paint on canvas, numbered 1/1, depicting Al Pacino as Scarface, signed by the legendary film actor and artist; "Alvarez vs. McGregor," a gicleé and hand embellished paint on canvas, numbered 1/1, signed by the UFC mixed martial artist/boxer Conor McGregor and Mr. Brainwash; Keith Haring's enhanced Christopher Street Subway Sign with his drawing of two people (estimate: $10,000 - $15,000) and one half of Alex Katz's oil on canvas "Ada with Scarf" a piece created in the 1970s when Katz cut the canvas in half and gave the halves to his two graduate assistants (estimate: $10,000 - $15,000). "The selection of these items provides collectors with a diversity of works covering not only the most influential and iconic artists of our time but showcasing alongside them new and important works of the most talked about up and coming artists," said Tim Luke, Executive Director, Street & Contemporary Art, Julien's Auctions. "This sale reflects the interesting, provocative and controversial artwork mirroring the Street Art movement." Celebrity art will also be spotlighted in this auction event. One of Hollywood's most versatile leading men, Tony Curtis was known for his memorable comedic roles in Billy Wilder's classic Some Like It Hot to his epic portrayal of Spartacus. The 1950s and '60s heartthrob was also an accomplished poet and painter whose original acrylic painting, "Red Table," was acquired by the Study Program for the Film and Media Collection of the Museum of Modern Art as part of their Permanent Collection. Julien's is proud to offer Tony Curtis "Untitled," an acrylic on canvas (1987) (estimate: $4,000 - $6,000) at this auction (shown photo left). Phyllis Diller was not only a groundbreaking stand-up female comedian to become a household name in the U.S and paved the way for generations of other female comics, Joan Rivers, Ellen Degeneres, among others. She was also a self-taught artist, who painted portraits and still lifes in acrylics, watercolors, and oils throughout the 1970s and whose work filled her Brentwood, California home. Her legendary "art parties" featured the sales of her artwork along with her extravagant stage clothes and costume jewelry. Ms. Diller's original works, "Three Women," an acrylic on print cloth (1988) (shown photo right) and "Odessa," an acrylic on canvas (1988), will be available for auction (each estimated at $1,000 - $2,000). Billionaire real estate mogul. Reality TV personality. The 45th President of the United States. Much is known of the many high profile roles Donald Trump has played as one of the most talked about cultural figures of our time. But less is known of Trump's talents as an artist. A rarely seen drawing has surfaced revealing the future President's artistic inclinations in the early '90s during his days as a real estate developer.

The 12" x 9" piece depicts a sketch of the Empire State Building, a significant symbol of Trump's ascent as a real estate mogul as he brokered the sale of New York's most iconic symbol (shown on page 1). He created the work during the opening of his Mar-a-Lago club and used it as an entry point into the Palm Beach social set by donating the piece for a charity auction at the ArtGras art fair in Palm Beach County. The piece hand drawn in black marker on paper and signed Donald J. Trump originally sold at less than $100 and is now estimated at $8,000 - $12,000. The piece's original consignor will donate a portion of the proceeds to National Public Radio with Julien's matching the portion donated.
