Hollywood Bowl 2012 Classical Season Kicks Off with Two Concerts Led by Leonard Slatkin, 7/10 & 12

By:

The Los Angeles Philharmonic's classical season at the Hollywood Bowl opens with internationally-acclaimed conductor and hometown hero Leonard Slatkin leading Beethoven's Ninth Symphony, Tuesday, July 10, at 8 pm. Slatkin continues the classical week, leading the LA Phil in a program showcasing Saint-Saëns' Symphony No. 3, Thursday, July 12, at 8 pm.

The first half of Tuesday's program includes music by three gifted contemporary women: Anna Clyne's Rewind, Anne LeBaron's American Icons and Cindy McTee's Tempus Fugit. The program closes with Beethoven's epic Ninth Symphony with soprano Rachel Willis- Sørensen, mezzo-soprano Sasha Cooke, tenor Gordon Gietz, bass Christian Van Horn and the Los Angeles Master Chorale. For the choral finale, with its famous "Ode to Joy," unique video imagery by multimedia artist Herman Kolgen will be shown on the Bowl's big screen. Co-commissioned by the LA Phil and the J. Paul Getty Museum, the imagery was inspired by Gustav Klimt's Beethoven Frieze in honor of Klimt's 150th birthday. Click here to see a preview of the video.

The performance is presented in conjunction with the Getty's landmark exhibition Gustav Klimt: The Magic of Line on view from July 3 through September 23, 2012 at the Getty Center.

Slatkin continues the week on Thursday leading the LA Phil in a program showcasing Saint-Saëns' Symphony No. 3 ("Organ") and featuring violinist Daniel Hope, in his Hollywood Bowl debut, performing Prokofiev's Second Violin Concerto.
