FALSETTOS to Open in Irvine with The Wayward Artist

The Wayward Artist will present the Tony Award-winning musical Falsettos July 23 through August 2 at Irvine United Congregational Church, 4915 Alton Parkway in Irvine. Shows are Thursday - Sundays both weekends at 8:00 p.m.

With music and lyrics by William Finn and James Lapine, Falsettos tells the story of a modern Jewish family navigating love, identity, and change in late-1970s and early-1980s New York City. At its center is Marvin, who leaves his wife to pursue a relationship with his lover, Whizzer, setting in motion a journey that reshapes the lives of everyone around him. As the family navigates shifting relationships, a son's bar mitzvah, and the emerging AIDS crisis, they discover that family is defined not only by blood, but also by the people who choose to stand beside us.

"Falsettos is a celebration of chosen family, authentic identity, and the courage to love through life's complexities," said Craig Tyrl, Founder and Artistic Director of The Wayward Artist. "It's a musical I've wanted to direct for many years. As a child of the 1980s, I find its story just as powerful and relevant today as it was when it was written. It beautifully reflects both The Wayward Artist's mission and my own theology as a pastor, centering radical inclusion, compassion, community, and the transformative power of love." (more)

At the heart of the musical is the unconventional community that forms around Marvin and his family. Together, they confront questions of responsibility, forgiveness, and what it truly means to show up for one another. With humor, vulnerability, and one of Broadway's most beloved scores, Falsettos captures both the joy and heartbreak of human connection, reminding audiences that love often flourishes in imperfect circumstances.

"At The Wayward Artist, we are drawn to stories that center queer lives, challenge traditional notions of family, and honor the courage it takes to live authentically," Tyrl said. "Falsettos embodies that spirit with honesty, humor, and profound compassion. It invites audiences to laugh, grieve, celebrate, and reflect on how we care for one another in the face of change, loss, and hope.

ABOUT THE WAYWARD ARTIST:

The work of The Wayward Artist is edgy and unafraid to push the envelope of politeness, political correctness, and propriety. It doesn't shy away from adult content, language, and mature subject matter. It's about innovation and re-invention and, wherever possible, delight in showing audiences a mirror to challenge pride, prejudices, and point-of-view. Its mission is to be the home for wayward artists - the lost, the naked, the vulnerable, and to produce wayward works of professional quality that are new, edgy, and reimagined. www.thewaywardartist.org
