BWW Reviews: Do Sample TACO KISSES - A Spicy Hot, Hilarious Treat!
Taco Kisses/by Oscar Quintero & Kurt Koehler/directed by Kurt Koehler/Cavern Club Celebrity Theater @ Casita Del Campo/thru July 5, 2015
Oscar Quintero 'nails it' again with his alter ego Kay Sedia in his non-stop, laugh-inducing, thigh-slapping seventy minutes, Kay Sedia in Her Juan Woman Cho: Taco Kisses. Quintero handles his self-written lines (co-written by Kurt Koehler) and his ad libs so seamlessly and smoothly, it's hard to tell what's not actually written down. Quintero's drag character Kay Sedia commands the stage especially when she mangles words she thinks she's familiar with (e.g. "I digest," instead of the correct "I digress." "Immigration" subbing for "imagination" (in context, this intentional switch's hysterical). Kay Sedia uproariously performs (in her variety of vocal ranges) a string of popular songs (rewritten in the style of "Weird Al" Yankovic by Quintero and Dr. Dan (who also doubles as the very funny pre-show warm-up)).
The show opens with a medley of "Born in the USA" and "I'm a Believer" transforming into "Taco in the USA" and "I'm Kay Sedia." The closer, JLo's "Waiting for Tonight," a perfect timely commentary of Trump becomes "Waiting for My Green Card."
Kay Sedia receives able assist from the smooth country vocals of Daron Duncan Quintero converting "You're the Reason God Made Oklahoma" into "You're the Reason God Made Tijuana."
Guest starring opening night, director Koehler, in his drag persona Aunt Cassie Rolle, wowed in his/her Broadway medley of Cabaret's "Mein Heir," Chicago's "When You're Good to Mama," and Dreamgirls' "And I'm Telling You I'm Not Going." Just stunning!!!
Your laugh muscles, whistling lips and clapping palms will definitely get quite a workout experiencing Kay Sedia's Taco Kisses.
