Steel Magnolias, written by Robert Harling, is set in Truvy Jones's beauty salon in Chinquapin, Louisiana, where a close-knit group of women share life's joys and hardships with sharp humor and unwavering love. The play follows Truvy, her assistant Annelle, wealthy widow Clairee Belcher, curmudgeon Ouiser Boudreaux, career woman M'Lynn, and her daughter Shelby as they navigate life's many hurdles together. The Rep's production features Miranda Jane as Truvy, Grace Pitts as Annelle, Laurie Pascale as Clairee, Louisa Mauzé as Shelby, Jane Morgan Balgavy as M'Lynn, and Alanna Hamill Newton as Ouiser, directed by Christine O'Grady. First produced Off-Broadway in 1987, the play was written by Harling as a tribute to his sister Susan Harling Robinson and her battle with complications related to Type 1 diabetes.
