Review: IRVING BERLIN'S ANNIE GET YOUR GUN at The Royal Theatre in Benton

There’s no business like show business, and The Royal Theatre is proving exactly that with its lively, crowd-pleasing production of Annie Get Your Gun, running now through April 19. Nestled in the heart of downtown Benton, this historic venue once again transforms into a toe-tapping Wild West spectacle, reminding audiences why this Irving Berlin classic has remained a staple of American musical theatre for decades.

Based on the life of sharpshooter Annie Oakley, Annie Get Your Gun follows a backwoods girl whose extraordinary aim lands her a spot in Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Show, where she finds both fame and unexpected romance with fellow marksman Frank Butler. As Annie’s star rises, so does the tension between love and competition, all set to a score filled with beloved classics like “There’s No Business Like Show Business” and “Anything You Can Do.”

Under the direction of Kathy Bartholmey, this Royal Players production leans fully into the charm and humor of the piece, delivering a spirited evening that feels both nostalgic and fresh. From the moment the curtain rises, the audience is swept into a world of big personalities, playful rivalries, and larger-than-life showmanship. 

My starry-heart eyes go to Katie Choate as Annie Oakley. Choate captures that perfect balance of grit and innocence, making Annie both a sharpshooting powerhouse and a lovable underdog you can’t help but root for, and her smile lights up the whole theatre. Vocally, she shines with a warm, confident tone that brings songs like “Doin’ What Comes Natur’lly” to life with ease and charm. Opposite her, Sean Grigsby’s Frank Butler provides a strong and charismatic counterpart, leaning into both the bravado and vulnerability of the role. He's an egotist that makes the audience fall in love with him. Their chemistry keeps the central romance engaging, with just the right amount of playful tension.

The supporting cast adds rich layers of personality to the production. Jessica Miller as Dolly Tate delivers sass and sparkle in equal measure, while Seth Hawkins as Buffalo Bill commands the stage with a showman’s flair that anchors the Wild West setting. Sa’teh Hampton’s Chief Sitting Bull brings a grounding presence, while Matthew Burns as Charlie Davenport keeps the action moving with sharp comedic timing, ensuring the production never loses its momentum.

Choreographer Reagan Turbyfill brings a playful, high-spirited movement style that complements the show’s Western flair. The dance numbers are lively and engaging, adding visual excitement without overshadowing the storytelling. Combined with colorful costumes and a set that captures the traveling show atmosphere, the production creates a world that feels immersive and fun.

What makes this production especially delightful is its sense of community. The Royal Players continue to showcase local talent with heart and dedication, and that passion is evident in every scene. There’s a genuine joy radiating from the stage, and it's a lot of fun to watch.
