There’s something incredibly special about watching a young performer step into material that asks more of them—not just as an actor, but as a storyteller with empathy and insight. That’s exactly what Keegan Washington, a student at Little Rock Central High School, accomplished in his recent work in Brighton Beach Memoirs, bringing both sensitivity and thoughtfulness to a role that required emotional depth beyond his years.

Following the production, Washington took time to reflect on his experience, offering a glimpse into the mindset and motivation that fuels his growing passion for theatre.

What was your process for preparing for such a serious role?
“I really tried to put myself in his position and think about how much money would’ve mattered to a family of this time period, and how living paycheck to paycheck might influence somebody’s feelings of responsibility in the household.”

What lessons did you learn from working on this Neil Simon piece?
Working with the writing of Neil Simon left a lasting impression on Washington.
“I learned that in most cases, your family will always be there for you, and there’s little you could do to make them give up on you.”

What was your favorite part about Brighton Beach Memoirs?
“Doing a modern play for the first time and getting to work with Mr. Flowers for the first time as well.”

Tell me about your theatre teachers and the influence they have had on your theatrical career.
“Without my theatre teachers I never would’ve gotten into theatre. I never would’ve started without my troupe’s director.”

How has performing in such a historic building impacted your experience?
“It’s filled me with a lot of motivation and gives me even more of a drive to perform and represent my school.”

Do you plan on pursuing theatre beyond high school?
“Yes, I’m hoping to make a career out of it.”

Do you have any interests outside of theatre?
“I am interested in animals, psychology and video games.”

From his insightful preparation process to his clear appreciation for the people who have guided him, Keegan Washington is already demonstrating the kind of dedication that makes a lasting impact. Representing Little Rock Central High School with pride, and with his sights set on a future in the arts, this is only the beginning of a journey that audiences will want to keep watching. I can't wait to see what Keegan does next!
