Unicorn's BOLDNEWPLAYS Opens With RED, 9/20
By: Kelsey Denette
Unicorn Theatre's 38th Season of BOLDNEWPLAYS will open with the 2010 Tony Award Winner for Best Play, RED by John Logan. This play is a startling snapshot of an angry and brilliant artist at the height of his fame and takes you into the mind of master abstract expressionist Mark Rothko, for whom paintings are pulsating life forces and intended to "rip out your guts and expose your soul." Producing Artistic Director Cynthia Levin will direct. Local theatre legend Jim Birdsall will take on the role of Mark Rothko and Sam Cordes will play Ken, Rothko's young assistant. RED will now preview September 14-18 and play September 20-October 2, 2011. This is one week later than previously announced.
These date changes are due to a scheduling conflict and the nature of live theatre. The Goodman Theatre in Chicago has a very close relationship with Mr. Logan, and they had the opportunity to secure the first production after the Broadway run. They decided to open on September 17th, so our original opening of Sept 10th had to be moved back.
