MacArthur Genius Grant winner Samuel D. Hunter's drama The Whale has taken home Drama Desk, Lucille Lortel and GLAAD Media awards for its powerful story. In a small town in Idaho, Charlie is a six hundred pound man who teaches writing online and sits alone devouring junk food. Determined to reconnect with his long estranged daughter, he discovers a spitfire teen with an acerbic tongue. Savagely funny and deeply touching, this first production of Hunter's work in Kansas City will show you beauty in the unexpected.

Critics have praised Hunter's drama as "riveting... an impassioned and arresting clash of minds and emotions" - Rex Reed, New York Observer; "a deeply affecting and piercingly amusing play... [it] leaves an emotional wallop in its wake" - Joe Dziemianowicz, New York Daily News; and "sharp and funny... harrowingly good, endowing [its main character] with wit and dignity" - David Cote, Time Out New York.

Directed by Sidonie Garrett, the play features Phil Fiorini as Charlie, Cinnamon Schultz as Liz, Jacob Aaron Cullum as Elder Thomas, Daria LeGrand as Ellie, and Manon Halliburton as Mary.
