Scenic Carpentry Apprentice (Summer Seasonal) - The Glimmerglass Festival

The Glimmerglass Festival seeks a Scenic Carpentry Apprentice for its 2023 Festival Season.

The Glimmerglass Apprenticeship Program offers a well-rounded experience including structured training sessions, curated seminars, and frequent opportunities to learn and work alongside seasoned professionals in formal and informal settings. The Scenic Carpentry Apprentice reports to the Head Carpenter and ATD of Scenery Operations, while working alongside four Staff Scenic Carpenters and another Scenic Carpentry Apprentice. Supervisors will work with the apprentice to establish personal goals at the top of the apprenticeship and review progress throughout the season. The primary duty of this position includes assisting with the construction and modification of five mainstage productions and a children’s opera. Some shop projects will be worked on independently, while other projects will require working in a group setting. This position will also assist with initial install of scenery; load-ins and some changeovers. The Scenic Carpentry Apprentice will never be asked to be run crew for performances. Apprentice may be asked to work on shop maintenance projects around campus during down time.

Basic stage carpentry skills with both woodworking and MIG welding are required. This position also requires the ability to read drawings and have a basic knowledge of single purchase counterweight systems. Commitment to safe work habits and shop practices is essential. Must be willing to abide by Glimmerglass Festival’s current and potential future Covid-19 policies, including testing and wearing a mask on campus.

This apprenticeship runs May 1 to August 27, 2023. Apprentices are compensated at a rate of $14.20/hr, are eligible for overtime and are provided housing.
