Musical Theatre West – Seeking Designers & Technical Directors for 2026 Season

Location: Long Beach, CA

Musical Theatre West, one of Southern California’s leading professional musical theatre companies, is currently accepting applications for our 2026 Season. We are seeking costume, lighting, sound, projection, wig/hair, and props designers, as well as Technical Directors.

About MTW

Based in Long Beach, CA, Musical Theatre West is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization and a COST 2+ Equity playhouse producing high-quality, large-scale musicals with a supportive and collaborative artistic environment. Our productions are presented at the Carpenter Performing Arts Center and feature full professional design teams, crews, and resources.

Our mission is to preserve musical theatre as an art form, while reflecting and celebrating the diverse communities of Southern California. We are committed to building inclusive teams both on and off stage, and we strongly encourage BIPOC and diverse designers to apply.

2026 Season Titles & Production Schedule

Man of La Mancha – Feb 7–23, 2026

• Rehearsals: Jan 19 – Feb 1 • Tech: Feb 2–6

In the Heights – Apr 11–27, 2026

• Rehearsals: Mar 23 – Apr 5 • Tech: Apr 6–10

Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat – Jul 18–Aug 3, 2026

• Rehearsals: Jun 29 – Jul 12 • Tech: Jul 13–17

Little Women – Nov 7–23, 2026

• Rehearsals: Oct 19 – Nov 1 • Tech: Nov 2–6

Compensation

Designer fees start at $2,000–$3,500, depending on discipline and experience.

Technical Director compensation will be discussed based on experience and scope of work.

Technical Directors may be hired on a per-production basis.

Additional support provided for travel, housing (if applicable), and materials budgets.

Local candidates (Los Angeles/Orange County area) are strongly encouraged to apply.

Qualifications

Prior professional experience in musical theatre strongly preferred.

Strong collaboration and budget/schedule management.

Comfortable with tight timelines: ~2 weeks of rehearsal, 5 days of tech, 3 weeks of performances.

Commitment to a safe, inclusive, and educationally supportive backstage environment.
