The Old Globe, a Tony Award-winning theatre and one of the country’s leading regional LORT B+ theatres seeking qualified applicants for a Charge Scenic Artist. Position is responsible for leading the scenic art department in support of The Old Globe’s 15 show season. The Old Globe is known for producing a broad range of work from Shakespeare and the classical repertoire to world premiere musicals and plays, touring productions, and Arts Engagement events.



In this role, you’ll get to work with some of America’s best scenic designers, directors, and creative teams working in our three theatres located in San Diego’s beautiful Balboa Park. The paint shop is located at The Old Globe’s Technical Center, a 30,000 square foot facility a few miles from the theatres which also contains the scene shop, offices, and production storage. This position is an excellent opportunity to practice scenic artistry at the highest level in regional theatre.



Responsibilities: The Charge Scenic Artist is a key member of our scenery team and is responsible for all painting and surface finishes for all Old Globe productions and other assigned projects. Budget, schedule, and hire for all paint shop needs. Collaborate directly with designers to determine appropriate finish and paint techniques. Interpret designer renderings, drawings, and descriptions. Direct the work of staff and over-hire scenic artists, and estimate time and materials. The Charge Scenic Artist is integral to our safety programs, and must set and maintain safety standards and procedures and train and monitor employees for proper compliance with safe work practices.



Desired Knowledge and Experiences: Safe work practices with hazardous materials and respiratory protection, theatrical painting techniques, faux and fine painting techniques, color theory and mixing, 6 years progressive experience in a regional or professional scene shop.



Desired Skills: Shop and team leadership, demonstrated excellence in scenic painting, color matching and sculpting; training of artisans, trainees, and apprentices; excellent verbal communication; and ability to remain organized while overseeing multiple projects at once.



Must be able to lift 50 lbs. and work at moderate heights, occasional overtime required. Employees must be fully vaccinated for COVID-19 unless a medical or religious exemption would apply.



Hourly rate is $30.00 - $33.00 per hour. Full-time hourly position with benefits including 401(k), vacation, health insurance, and holidays.
