Spring Green, WI American Players Theatre (APT) is conducting a leadership search for its next Artistic Director. This is a rare opportunity to lead an organization that knows what it is, has the courage to name its non-negotiables, and that is genuinely aligned across artists, staff, board, and audience on the values that matter most. The right leader will embrace this clarity.
The Artistic Director will first and foremost set and fulfill the artistic vision in keeping with APT’s mission and values. Specifically, they will lead season planning and all artistic programming, setting and upholding high artistic standards. They will directly manage 30 staff members, including directors, actors, designers, voice & text coaches and artistic administrators. They will also be a key artist, typically a director, though they could serve in another capacity based on their expertise. The Artistic Director collaborates with the Managing Director in a co-leadership relationship.
APT believes how they work is as important as the work itself, and the Artistic Director is a primary steward of a collaborative and inclusive culture. This includes cultivating authentic relationships with artists and other stakeholders and playing a key role in APT’s journey of equity and belonging. About American Players Theatre
Located near rural Spring Green, WI, APT is located on 110 acres of woods and prairie. APT’s mission is to perform timeless, challenging, poetic texts, with Shakespeare at the center, to a broad audience. Each year, the theater produces approximately 200 performances of eight plays in rotating repertory, June through October, in two venues: a 1,000-seat outdoor theater and a 200-seat indoor theater. APT has 38 year-round and nearly 300 seasonal staff, a $10.7M annual operating budget and annual attendance of more than 95,000. APT received the 2026 Regional Theatre Tony Award. This is a full-time position and the pay range is $135,000 - $175,000 per year.
