ABOUT STUDIO THEATRE
Since its founding in 1978, Studio Theatre has been based in the historic neighborhood of Logan Circle in Washington DC. Inspired by the world around us, Studio brings personal, political plays to audiences across the Washington metropolitan area. Studio’s mission combines a commitment to artistic craftmanship with the connective power of live theatre: “To produce exceptional contemporary theatre in deliberately intimate spaces, fostering a more thoughtful, more empathetic, and more connected community, in Washington, DC and beyond.”
Recognized by the DC Council, the city’s main governing body, as “a pioneer in launching Washington, DC’s theatre into prominence in the American theatre of the 21st century,” Studio presents a diverse roster of thought-provoking contemporary plays featuring an array of local, national, and international theatre artists. Each season, Studio produces seven to nine productions of contemporary drama, including one to two new plays and commissions artists, particularly those early in their careers, to develop new works that will shape the field for years to come. We also aim to be an engaged member of our community—investing in ongoing partnerships with civic, social, and educational organizations—and nurture the next generation of arts leaders through a season-long professional development apprenticeship program.
Studio is a values-based organization that pursues artistry and inclusion, and brings characteristic thoughtfulness and daring to our efforts, onstage and off. We are committed to anti-racism in our work and make a concentrated effort to proactively dismantle barriers that have excluded people from joyful participation in our art form.
Throughout Studio’s four decades, the quality of Studio’s work has been recognized by sustained community support, as well as 398 nominations and 72 Helen Hayes Awards for excellence in professional theatre. Today, Studio stands as an anchor arts institution in Washington, DC, committed to artistry, professional development, and our community.
