Satchmo: A Tribute to Louis Armstrong, starring Kimble FunchessMonday, September 9 at Duling Hall 7:30 p.m.Tickets are $25 in advance / $30 at the door. As a trumpet player, composer, and singer, Louis Satchmo Armstrong continues to be one of the most influential worldwide figures in Jazz. His career spanned five decades, from the 1920s to the 1960s, and as many different eras in the history of jazz. Born and raised in New Orleans, he first came to prominence in the 1920s as a trumpet player. With his instantly recognizable rich, gravelly voice, he also became a well-known singer. His influence extended beyond jazz, and by the 1960s, he was widely regarded as an important influence on popular music as well as jazz. Satchmo was also one of the first truly popular African-American musical artists, and his reputation and musicianship allowed him access to the upper echelons of society. Kimble Funchess is a versatile trumpeter. He has performed with some of the nations greatest artists in Jazz, Gospel, Blues and R&B such as B. B. King, The OJays, Wilson Pickett, Charley Pride, The Temptations, The Four Tops, The Fifth Dimension, Paul Overstreet, Mavis Staples, Brandy, Dorothy Moore, Lionel Hampton, David Fathead Newman, Bobby Rush, Nanette Workman, Pine Top Perkins, David Banner, and the Spinners. He has also recorded with The Williams Brothers, The Jackson Southernaires, and has been featured on many Blues and Gospel recordings. Part of the Cabaret @ Duling Hall series. The Cabaret @ Duling Hall series is sponsored by Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Mississippi. This project is supported in part by funding from the MS Arts Commission, a state agency and in part, from the National Endowment for the Arts, a federal agency.
