Red Cliff is one of the best-known Chinese worldwide, the monumental work known as the legend of three kingdoms. The subject of innumerable editions, in theatre and cinema, this new production was performed with great success in China. Red Cliff tells the story of a famous battle during the three Kingdoms era, around 200 a.d.: the founder of Shu, Liu Bei, and the founder of the Wu Kingdom, Sun Quan, allied themselves against the warlord Cao Cao.

La battaglia decisiva si svolse a Red Cliff e determinò la sconfitta dell’armata di Cao costretta ad emigrare al Nord. Il National Center for the Performing Arts (inaugurato in occasione delle Olimpiadi 2008 ospitando per l’Italia l’Arlecchino del Piccolo) e la Beijing Opera House Troupe hanno collaborato alla costruzione di uno spettacolo che schiera i migliori attori, scenografi e costumisti cinesi. L’adattamento è stato realizzato dal drammaturgo Cai Fuchao, mentre Zhang Jigang, coreografo delle cerimonie delle Olimpiadi di Pechino, ha diretto lo spettacolo, la sua prima prova come regista d’opera. Contrariamente alla tradizione, che vuole una scenografia molto essenziale, regista e scenografo hanno creato un allestimento più simile a quelli dell’opera occidentale, arricchendolo di raffinati effetti visivi e sonori di tipo cinematografico. Il risultato è quello di una produzione fedele alla tradizione ma molto più interessante per un pubblico moderno, di giovani e di occidentali.
