McCarter's Timothy J. Shields Named Managing Director of San Diego's Old Globe Theatre ImageTimothy J. Shields, McCarter Theatre Center's managing director since 2009, will leave McCarter in October to become the managing director of The Old Globe Theatre in San Diego, California.

Shields previously served from 1983 to 1992 as McCarter's business manager and general manager, and his professional experience includes serving as managing director of Milwaukee Repertory Theater and at Geva Theatre Center in Rochester, New York.

In announcing his departure, Shields described his time as McCarter's managing director as "in many ways the pinnacle of my career to date." He especially cited artistic director Emily Mann and special programming director William W. Lockwood for their leadership and vision, and the McCarter staff, who "have been professional in every sense of that word, hard-working, and unfailingly dedicated to the production of world-class theater and presenting world-class artists." His relationships with current and former members of the McCarter board of directors "have been among the most treasured I've encountered in my career."

Artistic director Emily Mann commented "I am forever grateful to Tim for his leadership and vision during the most challenging of economic times. He leaves our theater stronger than he found it in every way, and I wish him only the best on his exciting next chapter. "

Board president Leslie Kuenne thanked Shields for the opportunity to work with him and for his leadership, and for in particular for strengthening the theater's operations, its staffing, and its capacities to achieve its mission. She described his new appointment as "a great opportunity for Tim to be in a wonderful theater in a wonderful location."

The board will begin a national search for a new managing director immediately, with assistance from the search firm Management Consultants for the Arts.
