Multiple Events Postponed in Indonesia Due to Nationwide Demonstrations

Multiple performing art events scheduled to take place during this weekend have been postponed due to nationwide demonstrations.

The demonstrations began on Thursday, August 28 in several major cities across Indonesia, mainly protesting lavish allowances for parliamentary members during a period of economic turmoil and rampant inflation. Amidst clashes between protesters and the police, a ride-hailing driver -- who happened to be at the scene for an unrelated job -- was fatally struck by a police vehicle.

The incident gave raise to even bigger demonstrations the next day, with thousands decrying the death of 21-year-old Affan Kurniawan as a case of police brutality.

Due to the ongoing demonstrations, several events -- including performing art events -- have been canceled or postponed, chiefly in the capital city of Jakarta.

Postponed events include a ballet performance of Alice in Wonderland by Indonesia Dance Company, the music festival Indonesian Orchestra & Ensemble Festival, and performing art classes by Center Stage Community and Creangers.

Some events, such as the play Bunga Penutup Abad by Titimangsa, went on as planned. Others, like the theatrical performance Gareng Kembar by Wayang Orang Bharata elected to condut their performance behind closed doors, with no external audience. 

This incident highlights how political events can affect the arts. All artists and patrons are advised to practice caution while going about their day or engaging in activism.
