A determined librarian and a segregationist senator face off over an innocent childrens book in 1959 Montgomery, Alabama. Depicting the marriage of two rabbits who happen to have different-colored fur the story has Sen. E.W. Higgins calling for a book ban. But even as the pressure mounts, Indiana raised and educated librarian, Emily Wheelock Reed refuses to yield to censorship. Inspired by true events, Alabama Story is a stirring testament to free expression, just as the civil rights movement is flowering. Political foes, star-crossed lovers, and one feisty childrens author inhabit the same page to conjure a Deep South of the imagination. 2019 marks the 60th anniversary of these true events.

Cast and Creative team for ALABAMA STORY at Actors Theatre of Indiana

CARMEL, INDIANA – Actors Theatre of Indiana has announced the cast for the upcoming ALABAMA STORY which opens Friday, October 25 in Carmel at the Studio Theatre.

Step into the Deep South of the Imagination … An Indiana native who becomes state librarian of Alabama finds her life and livelihood at risk when a controversial children’s book crosses her desk. The innocent tale of a white rabbit marrying a black rabbit is angering politicians in the Civil Rights era. But will Emily Reed give in to demands to have the book burned? Meet history’s forgotten hero of free speech in the Indiana premiere of a fact-inspired, highly theatrical new American play brimming with humor, heart and humanity.

Actors Theatre of Indiana is excited to announce our partnership with the Central Indiana Chapter of the IU Alumni Association as well as Culver Connections for this production. In this true story, heroine Emily Reed was an Indiana University graduate. All IU Alumni will receive $10 off their ticket using promo code “IUNight”. After the show, there will be a Meet and Greet with playwright Kenneth Jones for the IU Alumni.

Emily’s hometown was Culver, IN. Her father, Dr. Charles E. Reed, was a prominent and highly respected Culver physician for nearly 30 years, as well as the chief physician at Culver Military Academy. Saturday, November 2, is Culver Night at ATI! All Culver Alumni will receive $5.00 off their ticket. After the show, there will be a Meet and Greet with playwright Kenneth Jones for Culver Connections.
