Horse Head Theatre Presents the World Premiere of SPAGHETTI CODE, 7/12-28

By:

Horse Head Theatre Co., a Houston-based theatre company, announces their upcoming production Spaghetti Code, which will run July 12 though 28 on the 2nd floor of PJ's Sports Bar, 614 West Gray, Houston, TX 77019. Tickets are $20 and $10 for students.

Spaghetti Code follows Milly (Ivy Castle) and Tim (Drake Simpson), a loving couple with one big issue; Milly can't get pregnant. After years of trying, and copious amounts of wasted money, she comes up with a solution: Ask her husband and best friend Stacy (Mischa Hutchings) to have a baby together. However, Milly doesn't want this to be a miracle of modern science, she wants them to do it the old fashioned way - in bed.

Through a mix of comedy and drama, the three, along with the couple's good friend and reproductive endocrinologist Phil (Andrew Love), go through a tangled mess of misconstrued feelings, confused affections, sadness and guilt, and then there is a baby to think about!

Spaghetti Code is a world premiere written by Houston-based playwright Abby Koenig. This is Horse Head's second Koenig world premiere, having produced the playwright's family dramedy Your Family Sucks to rave reviews in 2012.

Spaghetti Code is part of a Horse Head new initiative to produce female playwrights. In addition, the company has added several new members - all women - including Jacey Little who will now serve as Artistic Director. Little previously worked at the Alley Theatre as Associate Literary Manager and Dramaturg. She has an MA in Theatre Studies from University of Houston and a BFA in Dramaturgy from the University of Oklahoma.

"Abby's Spaghetti Code is a hard-hitting dark comedy: the script is hilarious, yet it also raises important questions about women and men's agency," says Little. "I had worked previously with Horse Head and Kevin Holden, the company's founding Artistic Director, and we both agreed that Spaghetti Code was the perfect show to launch a new chapter in the company's history."

This led the two to a larger conversation about Horse Head's future and artistic leadership. Horse Head wants theatre that gets people's blood pumping, and the two felt that Spaghetti Code will undoubtedly do this.

Holden remains a committed Horse Head company member, but Little will take the reins beginning with the upcoming world premiere of Koenig's Spaghetti Code.

Of course one thing that won't change about Horse Head is their use of nontraditional spaces and audience immersion tactics. For this production, Horse Head will transform the second floor of PJ's Sports Bar into the main characters' home.

"We will always be Horse Head," says Holden. "But with the addition of Jacey, Horse Head is taking steps to become a bigger company with more opportunities to create the type of work we are known for."

Spaghetti Code opens July 12 and runs Saturdays, Sundays and Mondays through July 28. Tickets can be purchase online or at the door.
