October promises to be one of the biggest yet at Blue Note Hawaii, the state's premier venue for the world's most celebrated artists. The month kicks off with architects of the Jamaican sound, Sly & Robbie and the Taxi Gang and the first time Hoku Award-winners Amy Hanaiali'i and Willie K will perform together in the showroom.

Then it gets funky with The Average White Band, called one of the greatest funk and soul bands in history. Straight from New Orleans, the Dirty Dozen Brass Band will have you on your feet and Incognito and Big Bad Voodoo Daddy keep the party going in the middle of the month. The legendary Yardbirds close out October with their signature guitar pyrotechnics that made them so famous. Blue Note Hawaii also hosts more local talent including Makana, Tavana, the Pacific Harp Project, YOZA, for the first time together on the Blue Note stage - Amy & Willie K.

Additional outreach to locals is the 15% kama'aina discount available to residents for all shows at all price levels. This is available online with code MAHALO15, as well as in person at the box office. Parking is validated at the Ohana East Hotel for $6 for four hours.

Sly and Robbie, affectionately known as the Riddim Twins, are perhaps the premiere architects of the modern sound of Jamaican music. Building on the cornerstones of Studio 1 and other early pioneers of the Jamaican recording industry, Sly and Robbie became the driving force behind the fabled Channel 1 sound that dominated reggae throughout the late 70's and early 80's. Subsequent work, most notably with Peter Tosh and Black Uhuru, set the pace for the changing sound of reggae in the post-Bob Marley era.

Described as "dazzling" by the New York Times, Makana is an internationally-acclaimed guitarist, singer, composer and activist who is widely known for lending his musical talent for social change. He has been a TEDx talk presenter, and his guitar playing has been featured on three GRAMMY®-nominated albums, including the soundtrack of the Academy-Award winning film "The Descendants." Makana's captivating and wide-ranging performance style has led him to share the stage with Jason Mraz and Jack Johnson, open for music legends Sting, Carlos Santana and Elvis Costello, and perform in venues ranging from Asian and European opera houses to The White House. He has most recently just returned from opening on the national tour for Bad Company and Joe Walsh and was recently featured on the cover of FRETS Magazine. He has released eight records to date and most recently a music video anthem, "Fire is Ours," for Presidential candidate Bernie Sanders.

Average White Band (AWB) is widely regarded as one of the best soul and funk bands in the history of music. Though best known for their timeless instrumental mega-hit 'Pick Up the Pieces' the band's strength actually lay in their consistently accomplished song-writing, stretching across severAl Gold selling albums and multiple GRAMMY® nominations for the legendary Atlantic Records. Somewhat incongruously, given their Scottish roots, the six-piece took the influences of their R&B; heroes - people like Marvin Gaye, JAmes Brown, Donny Hathaway and others - and developed their own 'authentic' sound which was eagerly adopted by black audiences in the US and elsewhere.

Tavana

Tavana's innovative sound has gained him radio play of original music like Vanster Hop, Warrior Song, Still They Want More, Wino, Desert Rain and My Carnival quickly gaining momentum among the local scene.

Direct from New Orleans!! The Dirty Dozen Brass Band

Date: October 11 and 12

Showtime: 6:30pm & 9pm

Doors: 5pm & 8:30pm

Tickets: $45, $35, $25

In 1977, The Dirty Dozen Social and Pleasure Club in New Orleans began showcasing a traditional Crescent City brass band. It was a joining of two proud, but antiquated, traditions at the time: social and pleasure clubs dated back over a century to a time when black southerners could rarely afford life insurance, and the clubs would provide proper funeral arrangements. Brass bands, early predecessors of jazz as we know it, would often follow the funeral procession playing somber dirges, then once the family of the deceased was out of earshot, burst into jubilant dance tunes as casual onlookers danced in the streets. By the late '70s, few of either existed. The Dirty Dozen Social and Pleasure Club decided to assemble this group as a house band, and over the course of these early gigs, the seven-member ensemble adopted the venue's name: The Dirty Dozen Brass Band. Thirty-five years later, The Dirty Dozen Brass Band is a world famous music machine, whose name is synonymous with genre-bending romps and high-octane performances. They have been featured guests on albums by artists including David Bowie, Elvis Costello, Dr. John, Widespread Panic, Modest Mouse, Dave Matthews Band and the Black Crowes.

Incognito featuring Maysa

Date: October 13 - 18

Showtimes: 6:30pm & 9pm

Doors: 5pm & 8:30pm

Tickets: $65, $45, $35

The enduring success of Incognito is one of the great stories of UK music during the last four decades. Look at the recent history of soulful UK artists and you will find any number of short-lived acts that have achieved pop success. Narrow it down to those that have created a uniquely British sound and have endured as global phenomenon on their own terms, and the list becomes short. Dues, then, to Jean-Paul "Bluey" Maunick and Incognito, formed in 1979 and celebrating 36 years of positive vibes and undiluted Jazz-Funk in 2015. Having moved to London from his native Mauritius at age ten, the UK live scene was a key inspiration for Bluey. "Defining moments for me?" Bluey reminisces, "Discovering Stevie Wonder and Marvin Gaye, of course, as well as Santana, Earth Wind & Fire, and Kool & The Gang. But the real link to Incognito's genesis came from UK bands like Gonzalez and FBI. These were people that lived in your town and walked your streets.

Incognito's Blue Note Hawaii residency will feature GRAMMY®-nominated jazz/soulR&B singer Maysa Leak (a.k.a Maysa), who is featured on nine of the band's recordings and appears frequently as Incognito's guest vocalist.

Big Bad Voodoo Daddy

Dates: October 19 - 23

Showtimes: 6:30pm & 9pm

Doors: 5pm & 8:30pm

Tickets: $55, $45, $35

Together for over 23 years, Big Bad Voodoo Daddy - famously named after an autograph by blues legend Albert Collins - has appeared in concert venues across the world, sold millions of records, and had their music appear in hundreds of movies and television shows. With sold out concerts from the Hollywood Bowl to Lincoln Center, appearances with many of the country's finest symphony orchestras, and television appearances ranging from Dancing with the Stars to Superbowl xxIII, Big Bad Voodoo Daddy continues its decades long mission to celebrate and revitalize jazz and swing music - America's original musical art form - and bring joy to audiences around the world.

YOZA

Date: October 25

Showtimes: 6:30pm & 9pm

Doors: 5pm & 8:30pm

Tickets: $35, $25, $15

Yoza took to music early, learning the ukelele at age five. By the time she turned 10, she performed with world-renowned ukelele master, Ray Sakuma, as a "Super Keiki." Not being bound by one instrument, she began playing the saxophone at age 12 with her school's symphonic orchestra. Her accomplishments as a saxophonist gained her a full music scholarship to Hawai'i Pacific University. In the summer of 2012, Yoza was asked to perform at the Waikiki Shell with Matt Catingub and the Hawai'i Symphony Orchestra. She considered it a huge accomplishment to hear her original music come to life, especially because she didn't have an album out at the time. In 2013, Yoza released her highly-anticipated debut album, self-titled "Yoza." She was able to get three nominations for her album at the 2014 Na Hoku Hanohano Awards (Hawai'i's version of the GRAMMY® Awards) and took home the award for "R&B Album of the Year." Yoza released her brand new EP, "Prologue," in June 2016.

The Yardbirds

Dates: October 28 - 30

Showtimes: 6:30pm & 9pm

Doors: 5pm & 8:30pm

Tickets: $55, $45, $35

By now, everyone knows the Yardbirds legend, if not their music; the band graduated three of the great Ph.D.s of rock guitar: Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck and Jimmy Page. They created hard rock out of standard twelve-bar blues, doubling the tempos and whacking the amps up to ten. On the British club scene, the Yardbirds, the Animals, and the Rolling Stones ruled the stages. The Yardbirds expanded the range of the electric guitar, experimenting with feedback, sustain, and fuzz tone. They were the bridge between the tributary white R&B of early-sixties London and the pastures of fuzz-toned psychedelia and power-chorded heavy metal plowed much later in the decade and throughout the seventies. Yes, the Yardbirds laid the groundwork for rock guitar as we know it and perhaps more than any other group, brought guitar pyrotechnics to rock & roll in the 1960s. By introducing Clapton, Beck and Page to the world, and giving them plenty of space to create, the band set the template not only for Cream, the Jeff Beck Group and Led Zeppelin (whose original moniker was the New Yardbirds), but for virtually every rock group featuring distortion, feedback and in-your-face electric-guitar virtuosity.

The Pacific Harp Project

Dates: October 31

Showtimes: 6:30pm & 9pm

Doors: 5pm & 8:30pm

Tickets: $35, $25, $15

Praised for their "engaging jazz...with scintillating plays of light and subtle colors" by DownBeat Magazine, Pacific Harp Project's emergence on the jazz scene has surprised listeners with a unique sonic experience. By incorporating classical harp music into the realms of jazz, pop, and fusion, this groundbreaking group "leads the listener to the conclusion: The harp has been unchained and left to go wherever it is guided." (AllAboutJazz.com) PHP was founded in 2014 and released their eponymous debut album in December, 2015 with a sold-out concert. The album won the 2016 Na Hoku Hanohano Award for Instrumental Album of the Year, and received positive reviews from DownBeat Magazine, Jazz Weekly, CD Hotlist, AllAboutJazz.com, The Aquarian Weekly, TheJazzPage.com, Midwest Record, LA Jazz Scene, Honolulu Star Advertiser, and ASX.com.
