With SCHOLL - Die Knospe der Weißen Rose/SCHOLL – The Bud of the White Rose, Titus Hoffmann and Thomas Borchert tell the story of Hans and Sophie Scholl for the first time as a musical from a fresh, contemporary perspective. Through a multilayered narrative structure of memories, flashbacks, and visions, the work not only explores resistance during the Nazi era, but also questions the very ways in which history is told and remembered.

At its core are the characters’ personal conflicts, the queer dimension of Hans Scholl’s story, and the close connection between the private and the political. Drawing on letters, diaries, and poems by the historical figures themselves, the musical creates an intense musical portrait of courage, identity, and humanity.

The musical premiered in 2023 — 80 years after the historical events — and was met with enthusiastic acclaim from both audiences and critics alike. SCHOLL – The Blossom of the White Rose is currently being performed to overwhelming response at the Opernhaus Magdeburg. In addition, the production’s live album was nominated for the German Record Critics’ Award.
