Overview
National Black Theatre's I Am SOUL Playwright Residency, launched in 2014, supports up to three early-career Black playwrights per cycle over 18 months as they write a newly commissioned play. Residents receive a stipend, development resources and a production team, with NBT committing to produce the finished work in a future season; finalists and selected applicants also receive micro-development support through the SOUL Reading Series. The 2026 application window ran April 16 - May 22, with onboarding in September.

Early-career Black playwrights nationally; up to three per cycle; commitment to produce the commissioned play in a future season.
