Breakdown

Arkansas Repertory Theatre. Produced in partnership with John Yonover. Produced by Catherine and Ron Hughes, Janna and David Knight.

Windfall follows the exploits of a group of friends who work together at a data entry facility under the auspices of an abusive, near psychotic boss. Their close relationships sustain them through abuse and mind-numbing boredom in this dead-end career. Desperate to escape and live the lives they've always dreamed of, they put it all on the line, betting every last cent they have playing the lottery. . But when they each deny holding the winning ticket despite all evidence to the contrary, it brings out the hysterically worst in these best friends. Compassion and human decency have no place in a world where money can buy happiness. Windfall is a dark, hilarious comedy that delves into how far any of us would go, how despicable we might become, in our attempt to have it all.

***All actors must be in good physical health as the play does become very active and demanding.

**All the characters, with the exception of Glenn, go through a huge personality change. Each appears to be one thing initially only to be revealed in a much more raw and unflattering way as the play goes on.

Seeking Equity Actors for the following:

KATE REARDEN
Female, late 40s/early 50s. Kate is an attractive, older, single woman who manages the office with efficiency and competence where the play takes place. Her “mothering” of her co-workers eases the difficulties of their overbearing boss. She’s a charming and intriguing woman but also a bit of a problem drinker and somewhat loose in her personal affairs. When provoked, she can become quite brash and biting, even vindictive and vengeful.

HANNAH HOLMES
Female, 30-35. Hannah is the perfect girl next door – sweet, enthusiastic, bubbly, “one of the guys” and sexy in a real and approachable way. But she has built a miserable life for herself that can make her suspicious, paranoid, snarky as hell and actually vicious. She carries a huge amount of despair and pain on her shoulder that has formed a psychological “chip”.

JACQUELINE VANDERBILT
Female late 20s/early 30s. On the surface, Jacqueline seems to have a lot going for her. She is attractive, stylish, seemingly sophisticated and worldly and a young woman of real grace. She dislikes unpleasantness of any kind but she has been a victim in life and is disgusted and hostile to the assumptions that everyone makes about her. She does not trust people easily. She has put up walls that have kept her from being embraced by others. She may also harbor a truly cruel agenda. (Actors of all ethnicities encouraged to submit)

GALVAN KIDD
Male, 40s. Galvan is a man of faith, a churchgoer. He believes in holding himself to a high moral code of hard work, clean living and decency. He pays his bills on time and puts money in the bank. He believes that his choices will lead to just rewards. But he is also holier-than-thou and judgmental as hell. He struggles to keep a huge ego in check and doesn’t always succeed. He also cloaks his inner rage with a mask of amity and well being. (Actors of all ethnicities encouraged to submit. African-American actors particularly encouraged)

CHRIS HART
Male, 28-32. Chris is a good-looking, easygoing charmer and he uses this to his advantage whenever he can. His boyish grin and easy humor can engage anyone. He’s a bit of a puppy – sweet natured but often unaware of the problems his behavior causes. And although Chris is thoughtful and fun, he can also be a user and a taker. He manipulates people to do things for him, including taking the fall when necessary. Nothing is ever “his fault.” He is a born slacker with a loose moral compass for himself but holds others accountable to a much stricter standard. (Actors of all ethnicities encouraged to submit)

GLENN BRANNON
Male early 50s/mid 60s. Glenn is the boss and owner of the company. He is foul to his core with his bile literally oozing out of his throat on occasion. He is abusive, aggressive, vicious, condescending and seemingly cares for no one or no thing, save the profits of his business. His maniacal manipulation of his employees, although clever and effective, borders on the psychotic. Glenn has a keen observational eye and an incredibly sharp and fast wit. He is far smarter than anyone gives him credit for. He is also an inner moralist and philosopher.
