MATILDA

Co-Directors-Scott S Anderson & Mara Newbery Greer

Choreographer: Mara Newbery Greer

Rehearsals: 4/9/18 Opens: 6/10/18 Closes: w/o 10/20/18

[MATILDA](Age: 8 – 10). NO TALLER THAN 4’4”. Strong singer and confident speaker. Good understanding of text and intelligent approach to acting. Matilda should look like the runt of the litter. She does not appear posh or contemporary, rather more damaged and weak from a working class background. However, she is extremely bright, fearless and focused, and able to speak assertively. Matilda is a fiercely clever child, living in an abusive household she escapes into books and her imagination.

SEEKING Boys and Girls for the following roles:

All kids must dance and sing very well.

[ERIC](Age 8-11) HT: Up to 4'2. Tiny, cute, able to sing and dance well and be a good actor. He is a featured role in the ensemble being horribly picked on by the Trunchball but triumphing in the end! (Ears are stretched)

[NIGEL](Age 9-12) HT: Up to 4'5. Full of life and energy, maybe nerdy, maybe quirky. Must be excellent dancer, singer and actor. Featured role.

[BRUCE](Age 9-12) HT: Up to 4'10. Comedic actor needed for this role who is also a great singer and can dance. He has some great scenes especially when he is forced to eat a whole chocolate cake by Miss Trunchball. Singing is VERY important – broad range and pop style required (mini Michael Jackson in style) Face is a bit roundish, possibly chubby. Belts up to a F sharp. Featured role.

[TOMMY](Age 9-12) HT: Up to 4'9. Must be excellent dancer, singer and actor. The strongest dancer of the boys.

[AMANDA](Age 9-12) HT: Up to 4'5. She is tormented by the Trunchball. Must be excellent dancer, singer and actress with loads of character. (Is spun round by her braids)

[LAVENDER](Age 9-12) HT: Up to 4'6. Lavender is in awe of Matilda, Must be a strong dancer, actress and singer. Quirky. Full of beans. Featured role.

[ALICE](Age 9-12) HT: Up to 4'8. Good all round dancer/singer/actress.

[HORTENSIA](Age 10-12) HT: up to 4'8. The strongest dancer of the girls. Also strong singer and actress.

[ESCAPE ARTIST / DOCTOR] (Late 20s – Early 30s) MUST BE 6 FEET OR TALLER. THIS TRACK REQUIRES AN EXTREMELY STRONG ACTOR WITH GOOD MOVEMENT SKILLS.
Escape Artist - The beloved circus performer featured throughout Matilda’s “story”.
Doctor - Requires a high tenor with a comfortable top A.

[MICHAEL WORMWOOD](20s). Michael Wormwood - The Wormwood’s monosyllabic son. Needs good deadpan comedy and the ability to find a character during a lot of stage time with few words. Should be able to fully participate in all ensemble vocal and dance numbers.

[RUDOLPHO](20s) – Mrs. Wormwood’s dance partner. MUST BE AN EXTREMELY STRONG DANCER WITH EXPERIENCE OF PARTNER WORK. Latin ballroom experience an advantage. Should have a flare for character comedy, and have great vocal stamina for the number “Loud”. *all ethnicities*. CAST. Seeking understudies.

[MISS HONEY](Female 20’s – 30’s) A mild, quiet person who never raises her voice and seldom seems to smile, yet possesses the rare gift of being adored by every child under her care. She should have a curious warmth that should be almost tangible. Physically should be “slim and fragile that if she fell over she would smash into a thousand pieces like a porcelain figure.” Vocally needs a sweet, melodic, and pure sounding voice. Could even have a slightly folksy quality. Soprano up to Bb, with a strong and solid belt up to D.

[MRS. WORMWOOD](Female Late 20’s – Late 30’s) Mother of Michael and Matilda, and wife of Mr. Wormwood. She is obsessed with her amateur ballroom dancing and her looks. Like her husband she thinks very little of Matilda’s unique abilities and often berates her. She is as loud in her makeup and dress sense as she is in her voice – MUST have strong comedy. Needs a really strong belt voice, with matching vocal stamina. The number “Loud” is a hard sing, and requires a very strong tone, up to top F/G – with higher ad libs. Should have strong dance, Latin a particular advantage.

[MR. WORMWOOD](Male Late 20’s – Late 30’s) Must be 5’10” or taller. Matilda’s father. A dealer in second-hand cars, “a mean crooked crook” with a penchant for wearing jackets with large, brightly colored checks. Physically should have a weasely or ratty essence. Should ideally be a clown with an ex-punk rocker vocal. Needs to be agile, with precise enunciation and have a firm rhythmic sense.

[MRS. PHELPS](Female 30’s – 40’s) Seeking an African American actress who is comfortable with a Caribbean or African accent. Warm and nurturing local librarian who encourages Matilda’s love of reading. Must also be comfortable with some singing in the opening number.

[MISS TRUNCHBULL] Miss Trunchbull - Headmistress of Crunchem Hall Primary School. Miss Honey’s Aunt. Once a famous athlete, she is described as a “Gigantic Holy terror,” a “fierce tyrannical monster’ who “marches like a storm trooper with long arms swinging” with an “aura of menace.” Should be quite a physical character actor – must be physically fit and agile- able to convincingly play a “woman”. This is NOT a drag role.

CINDERELLA

Director/Choreographer-Jani Walsh-Weber

Rehearsals: 4/9/18 Opens: 6/8/18 Closes: w/o 10/20/18

ELLA: Female, 20's. ANY ETHNICITY. Though no one notices her beneath her rags and quiet demeanor, she is opinionated, charismatic, passionate, funny, and effortlessly beautiful. Idealistic and hopeful, she courageously challenges the prince to change the policies in his kingdom – and helps him discover who he truly is. Always her late father’s daughter, she is determined to see the good in everyone despite her hardships and suffering. We see her blossom into a confident woman. An elegant dancer, she must have strong dance and partnering skills and great comedic timing. Beautiful and expressive traditional musical theatre soprano.

TOPHER: Male, 20's. ANY ETHNICITY. A misguided and lost prince who longs to do something important with his life. Though brave and heroic, he feels lonely and unfulfilled. Charming but NOT a stereotypical ladies man, he is thoughtful, appealing, and innocent – with an unforced goofy streak. Moral, genuine, and kindhearted, he is at a crossroads and must take control of his kingdom and his future. Must have strong dance and partnering skills and great comedic timing. Soaring, rich musical theatre baritone to a G.

MADAME: Female, to play 40's to 60's. ANY ETHNICITY. Ella’s selfish stepmother. The epitome of vanity and fashion. A ravenous social climber who values wealth, status, and material possessions above all else. Unapologetically dismissive and sometimes cruel, Madame schemes her way up the social ladder. Must have incredible comic timing. Traditional musical theatre character voice.

SEBASTIAN: Male, to play 40's to 60's. ANY ETHNICITY. The kingdom’s Lord Chancellor. Though he is Topher’s trusted advisor, he is devious and selfish. Using propaganda and dishonesty, he keeps Topher isolated and in the dark about his kingdom. Sebastian rules without regard for the lower class, or anyone other than himself – and truly believes he deserves to rule the kingdom. Must have incredible comic timing. Traditional musical theatre character voice.

MARIE/FAIRY GODMOTHER: Female, to play 40's to 60's. ANY ETHNICITY. A friend to Ella, and the town’s resident crazy lady and beggar woman, Marie is actually a fairy godmother in disguise. She is wise, warm, otherworldly and charming. Marie rewards Ella for her kindness by making her dreams a possibility. Glorious and expressive traditional musical theatre soprano to a G.

GABRIELLE: Female, 20’s. ANY ETHNICITY. Ella’s stepsister and daughter of Madame. Encouraged by her mother and sister to value material wealth and social status, she unenthusiastically joins them in their abrasive behavior. She has always followed rules but her awkward exterior hides a fiery revolutionary spirit. Passionate, empathetic, and witty, she is drawn to Ella and Jean-Michel. Ironically aware that she doesn’t fit in with her family. Must have great comic timing. Strong and expressive traditional musical theatre voice.

CHARLOTTE: Female, 20’s. ANY ETHNICITY. Ella’s stepsister and daughter of Madame. Brash, self-centered, materialistic, snooty, loud, sassy, and bratty but in a funny and loveable way. She has a ridiculously high, but unfounded opinion of herself and has no concept of how ridiculous she looks. She never passes up an opportunity to be the center of attention. Ideally an extreme physical type. Must have great comic timing. Strong and expressive traditional musical theatre character belt to an F.

LORD PINKLETON: Male, to play 30’s to 40’s. ANY ETHNICITY. The Lord Chancellor’s right-hand man. Announces royal balls, banquets, and even the weather to the villagers. Must have great comic timing. Powerful operatic tenor to an A. Understudies the role of SEBASTIAN.

PRINCE OF EGYPT

[MOSES] Male, 20-30. Any ethnicity. A prince of Egypt. Playful but with a soulful core. Begins the show as a devil-may-care young man, a bit of the class clown, but grows into the leader of the Hebrew people, wise and serious. A high tenor (sings up to Bb) with a thrilling voice and large range.

[RAMSES] Male, 20-30. Any ethnicity. A prince of Egypt, heir to the throne. Moses’ brother. While also young, he has a serious and self-critical streak and is also quite competitive with Moses. His father and his responsibility as a future Pharaoh put a lot of pressure on him, and it shows. Through trials of great pain over the course of the show be ultimately becomes a great leader of the Egyptians. A tenor (sings up to G#), but with a well-developed lower range.

[TZIPPORAH] Female, 20-30. Any ethnicity. A Midian princess, fiery and rebellious. She is full of spirit and strength, and wants nothing more than for her people to be free. Deeply committed to her family, and eventually to her love for Moses. Must have a thrilling high belt, but also a well-developed and beautiful mix.

[JETHRO] Male, 40-65. Any ethnicity. The High Priest of Midian. A powerful, wise presence, with a joyful twinkle in his eye. Full of love and buoyancy, with a deep spiritual center. A high baritone (must sing up to G) with a warm voice.

He loves his sons deeply, but he loves Egypt more and everything he does is to protect and preserve his country. A low baritone/bass.

[QUEEN TUYA] Female, 35-55. Any ethnicity. The Queen of Egypt. Regal, wise, deeply loving. She always wanted another son after Ramses was born, and believes Moses was a gift from the gods. Over the course of the show she changes from being a vibrant, clever and even playful woman to broken creature devastated by the loss of her adoptive son.

[HOTEP] Male, 35-65. Any ethnicity. The High Priest of Egypt. A devout believer in the power of the Egyptian gods and Egypt itself. He is also a schemer, looking for ways to increase his own power. While at times this character has comedic moments because of his pomposity, he is also a serious player in the Egyptian court and should feel like a real threat to the princes. A low baritone/bass.

[AARON] Male, 25-40. Any ethnicity. Moses’ Hebrew brother. He’s someone who doesn’t want to rock the boat, and tries desperately to contain his radical sister. He’s a worrier and a bit of a nebbish. A strong singer, with a mid-tenor range.

[MIRIAM] Female, 30-40. Any ethnicity. Moses’ Hebrew sister. A believer. It is Miriam who always believed in Moses, and she who most fervently supports him and follows him once he finds out his true heritage. A strong singer with a well-developed belt, and a beautiful mix.

[NEFERTARI] Female, 20-30. Any ethnicity. Ramses’ wife-to-be. The daughter of one of the most powerful families in Egypt, she is marrying Ramses to return her family to the glory of being Pharaoh. Cold, snobbish, and seemingly heartless, we discover over the course of the show that there is a vulnerable woman underneath. A strong singer though full vocal range needed, belt and mix.
