Breakdown

Based on the beloved classic story by Frances Hodgson Burnett, THE SECRET GARDEN enchants and charms with a Tony-Award winning score. An orphaned girl transforms a neglected garden into a paradise and opens the hearts of all around her.

NOTE: The production requires high British and Yorkshire accents and features musician/actors and requires that some actors play violin, viola, woodwinds, accordion, or Bodhran. PLEASE DENOTE INSTRUMENT(S) YOUR CLIENT PLAYS.

SEEKING:

ARCHIBALD CRAVEN
(late 30s-mid 40s) (Bari/Tenor) A dark, romantic figure who has learned to hide from the world. Although he has a spine ailment, his true illness is grief from the loss of his beloved wife. Afraid to show emotion and fearful that his son has inherited his illness, he withdraws from everyone, living instead in the world of business and memories. Intimidating at first, we must comprehend that Archie has a great capacity to love. A truly romantic role with soaring solos filled with heart-felt passion. Upper class British accent.

DR. NEVILLE CRAVEN/LT. WRIGHT
(late 30s-mid 40s) (Bari/Tenor) MUST PLAY STRING INSTRUMENT. Counter to his brother, Neville is a man of his time. Intelligent, he is ruled by the scientific study of the day. He sees what is there and not more (except when it comes to his unrequited love for Lily). Shaped by convention, he means well but cannot see beyond his scientific mind – but his heart fills with emotion when he thinks on Lily. Upper class British accent. (will be CHORUS contract)

BEN/MAJOR HOLMES/DREAMER ENSEMBLE
(late 40s-60s) (Baritone) Working class gardener who knows more than he says. Charming, but a bit of a curmudgeon – always with a bit of a wink. ACTOR DOES NOT HAVE TO PLAY AN INSTRUMENT, BUT IT WOULD BE GREAT IF HE DOES. Yorkshire Accent. (will be CHORUS contract)

LILY CRAVEN
(early-mid 30s) (legit lyric soprano) The picture of grace and beauty – inside and out, Lily is the lovely late wife of Archibald. She appears as a ghostly presence and in Archie’s memories throughout the play. Charismatic and charming, she is the epitome of a loving mother and wife and the spiritual guide of the story. Upper class British accent.

MARY LENNOX
(Seeking an actress 18 – early 20s to play 15 years old) (young voice belt – Ab3-D5) A head-strong, smart and curious young girl. Requires great stage presence and emotional range. It is Mary who finds her own heart and enables Archie and Colin to open theirs and regain faith in living and loving.

MARTHA/DREAMER ENSEMBLE
(20s-early 30s) (Range: Mezzo-Soprano belt G3-D5) Working class. Dickon’s older sister. Sassy, imaginative, smart, compassionate. Whatever life brings her, she’ll be able to handle it. Yorkshire accent. ACTOR MUST PLAY AN INSTRUMENT – VIOLIN, VIOLA, ACCORDION OR WOODWIND – ANY ONE OK. (will be Chorus contract)

ROSE/MRS. WINTHROP/DREAMER ENSEMBLE
(late 20s-mid 30s) (Soprano legit) Beautiful, self-possessed and self-centered. Rose lacks the maternal instincts of her sister, Lily and would rather be surrounded by admirers, the belle of the ball. Upper class British accent. Also plays Mrs. Winthrop, the strict headmistress of a posh girls school. (will be Chorus contract)
