BREAKDOWN

THE GIVER

SYNOPSIS: Jonas' world is perfect. Everything is under control and safe. There is no war or fear or pain. There are also no choices. Every person is assigned a role in the community. But when Jonas turns 12, he is chosen for special training from The Giver — to receive and keep the memories of the community. The Giver is the only person who holds the memories of real pain and real joy. Now Jonas will learn the truth. Through this astonishing and moving adaptation, discover what it means to grow up, to grow wise, and to take control of your own destiny.

All roles: Any race/ethnicity. Adult performers - male, female, & nonbinary as noted below.

SEEKING:

Father (male-presenting, 35-45 years old) - A good natured man who is preparing his son for the Ceremony of Twelve. Works in the Nurturing center.

Mother (female-presenting, 35-45 years old) - A good natured woman. She serves on the committee. Mother is helping to prepare her son for the Ceremony of Twelve. Also doubles as the Chief Elder.

Lily (female-presenting) - a young girl, teenager, and elderly person, Jonas' little sister who is in a hurry to know all of the secrets of being older. May double as Fiona/Rosemary & others.

Jonas (male-presenting or non-binary, 18+ to play 11-year-old about to turn 12) - An eleven-year-old about to grow older. Jonas has anxieties about his Ceremony of Twelve when he and his peers will be assigned their positions in the community.

Asher (male-presenting or non-binary, 18+ to play 11-year-old about to turn 12) - Asher is an eleven-year-old about to grow older and the best friend of Jonas. They struggle with language and are concerned that their placement in the community is at risk. May double in other roles.

Fiona (female-presenting, 18+ to play a 11-year-old about to turn 12) - Another friend of Jonas who is an eleven-year-old about to grow older. She is capable and kind. (May double as Rosemary - a girl from the past)
