BREAKDOWN

S.I.M.P.S.

SYNOPSIS: Kevin's stumped. He knows men should talk about their feelings, but he also knows his voice probably isn't what the world needs. Tired of coursing a labyrinth of woman-respecting methods that even his feminist mother rejects, Kevin joins the Self-Improvement and Male Preservation Society (S.I.M.P.S.), a cult of men who live in the basement of an abandoned Toys R Us. These men are warm, they're welcoming, and above all, they're vulnerable. They're also hiding crucial information about how they became that way, but Kevin sees the results, not the torture reverberating beneath them. So when he finally learns about the source of their harmony, Kevin is horrified and intrigued. Should he consider their methods more deeply? Or would continuing to dig mean he's lost sight of what's violently clear on the surface? An absurd musical tragicomedy with a dangerous jazz-pop score, SIMPS blends contemporary themes with robust musical theatre structure as it delivers a searing biopsy of modern masculinity.

SEEKING:

Authentic pop voices with a love of storytelling and comedy.

KEVIN

18+ to play late teen, any ethnicity. A boy-slash-man who knows he should talk about his feelings, but who also thinks men's feelings is a nauseating topic of conversation. Pursues the principles of feminism in ways his feminist mother finds unacceptable. Apologizes frequently, corrects himself mid-sentence, lags a beat behind in most conversations. Unsure how to differentiate being heard from being loved. Would do anything for anyone who offered him the latter. Pop baritone (to a G)

THRASHER MCSHADOWTHORN

Late 20s to early 40s; any ethnicity. A former boxer who's now a wrestler. Strength used to be his pride and joy, but since throwing punches that hospitalized someone, he's become riddled with questions about how and whether his power should be harnessed. Thrasher breaks first when the group's logic begins fracturing. Pop baritone/bass with a strong ensemble blend and harmony skills.

DOUG

20s to 30s; any ethnicity. A Bushwick man who spent a decade agreeing with his (now-ex) girlfriend that he's the reason he's never had friends. Speaks devastating sentences with the flattest possible voice. Maybe unwittingly, Doug is the one most clearly articulating why this society exists. Pop Baritone/Tenor, with a strong ensemble blend and harmony singing skills.

ALREADY CAST

THE GOAT

THIS ROLE HAS BEEN CAST. 30 to 40 years old; any ethnicity. A dangerous and hyper-masculine figure who, unlike Kevin, has no doubts about his worth. The GOAT's words are suave, dangerous, and exquisitely built to resonate with miserable boys like Kevin. His warmth lies so close to depravity that it's often hard to distinguish the two. Hiding some crucial information about the nature of his existence. Strong pop baritone/baritone.

ROBERT ROSSMAN (THROB ROSS)

THIS ROLE HAS BEEN CAST. 20s to 35 years old; White. A fuckboy-ish artist who recently left Cooper Union's paint program. Spent his time at Cooper trying to make art that earnestly expressed his identity, but after being mocked for saying things like that, he thinks it's probably better for everyone if he pursues his creativity in private. Pop tenor with a strong ensemble blend and harmony skills.

SERGEANT

THIS ROLE HAS BEEN CAST. 30 to 50 years old; any ethnicity. A soldier who followed his country's orders, but who came home holding things he doesn't have words for. Follows a robust structure of journaling because his sense of self is so precarious. Unlike Thrasher, he's confident his actions were shameful, but he's less confident about how to move forward. Pop Baritone/Tenor, with a strong ensemble blend and harmony singing skills.

SOUND PERSON / KEVIN'S MOM / OTTO

THIS ROLE HAS BEEN CAST. Male/nonbinary; 18 to 35 years old; any ethnicity. A feminine boy who, after years of being bullied for his high voice, went quiet and built something to speak for him instead. The purpose of his construction was to make men understand the pain they create, in turn forcing them to hear him—but when Kevin arrives, Otto starts viewing the state of masculinity in a new, more complicated light. Doubles as Kevin's Mom. Pop Countertenor.
