BREAKDOWN

This vibrant and thought- provoking musical illuminates the world of five Filipino guest workers in Tel Aviv who care for elderly Orthodox men by day—and headline a drag show by night! Based on the true story behind a 2006 Israeli documentary, the Paper Dolls is a rich, unforgettable play (with karaoke music tracks) about the challenges that migrant workers face while yearning for citizenship. This American premiere plays as part of the 2018 “Voices From a Changing Middle East Festival”, following its 2013 world premiere at the Tricycle Theatre London.

NOTE ON THE PAPER DOLLS: None of them are biologically transsexual. They are gay men, cross-dressing – more subtly at some times than others – and living lives as close to that of a women’s identity (physically) as they can, as that’s how they feel, and depending on their situation – whether they are at work or play. They dress alternately as women or as men, but their male attire is decidedly feminine – hip hugging jeans, and blousy tops. Scarves. All of them have long hair, earrings. They are all of Filipino descent, and in addition to English which is their main way of communicating they speak some Tagalog, but also decent Hebrew – and little Yiddish. They are all solidly ‘working class.’ Outsiders.

SALLY
Male, 38 years old. Mature, serious- minded when at work, sensitive and articulate, eager to learn. Deeply spiritual (Catholic). Very responsible. But can rock out and be as crazy as the next when in drag, and loves performing. Talented drag performer with a unique style and ‘star’ quality. A deep and open-hearted caretaker. OFFER OUT ON THIS ROLE.

CHIQUI
Male, 38 years old, the official ‘manager’ of the Paper Dolls. He knows how to dress up for effect. He left home at 17, spent ten years in Saudi Arabia. Tons of street smarts. Knows the world. Kind-hearted. The most practical of the Dolls. There is a seriousness and sadness deep inside but he can be quite playful. He knows the stakes.

ZHAN
Male, 27 years old. ZHAN is a bit of a follower, defined in large part by his weight. He’s tubby, and sweet, big round face, and giggly. He very much needs the group, depends on them as family. They adore him, he has a heart of gold, but a very naughty side as well. He is quite shy even on stage, but loves being up there more than anything. Just wants to be included.

ETAI
Male, 32-35. A Gay Jewish Club Promoter born in Israel. Eager to promote himself and his career, and flailing a bit in the process. Gay, masculine. Handsome, very casual, sexy. Ego-driven, but raised with a real heart. Desperate to make his mark. Ambition hides his vulnerability. He guards himself with a kind of machismo, perhaps fearful of what is underneath. His mother has not fully accepted him.
