BREAKDOWN
SKIN TO SKIN
[ARICELY/ELLA/BETSEY] Woman / Girl; 16 to 39 years old; Black, Afro-Latina.
ARICELY: 16 years-old, Afro-Latina, lives with boyfriend's mother and family, semi-estranged from biological mother. Insecure which manifests in quest for attention. Starts with a Get Ready With Me YouTube channel with very few followers. Trying to keep her life together with charm. Not content without

love from her mother to giving love as a mother. Sings a lullaby.ELLA: Janae's wife, also a Black female identifying woman in her mid-30's and a teacher. Originally, the two were co-teachers together at the same school before Janae went into leadership. Ella is a free spirit, always wants to laugh, find humor and be silly. She has a big heart, is sensitive. Doesn't care for conflict, wants to make it all okay.
BETSEY: Black female identifying woman from the past — real person but depicted fictionally as if in a modern day documentary. Guardian angel, witness, spirit, present even in absence, with traces of Aricely's personality.
[JANAE/LUCY] Woman; 35 to 39 years old; Black.
JANAE: Mid-30's Black female identifying woman. Career educator, principal of the school she taught at, well-respected in her field and as a leader. She holds a PhD, down-to-earth demeanor. Dynamic person, students and teachers at her school might call her a force of nature. With Ella, she likes to give space for her silly self. She's equal parts both intense and chill. She brings joy to her work and to her relationship.
LUCY: Black female identifying woman from the past — real person but depicted fictionally as in a modern day documentary. Guardian angel, witness, spirit, present even in absence, with traces of the Janae's personality.
[HAZEL/CHERYL/ANARCHA] Woman; 40 to 49 years old; Black.
HAZEL: Black female identifying woman about 40 years-old or just over. Her lived life is at odds with the idea she has of what her life is supposed to be. She is constantly performing and curating, but not with Josh, with whom she's sometimes resentful. Success and prestige have meant a lot to her throughout life. She seeks to control all situations. She can only stuff her truths down so far and for so long.
CHERYL: Black female identifying woman, mid-40's. Devoted to her church and God, lives a life of charity and generosity, perhaps to a fault — needing to be needed and taking care of everything. Mother of Jacquez and Aricely opted to live with them just over a year ago rather than move to a new town with her mom and blended step family. Cheryl has treated Aricley like her daughter, perhaps projecting grief from losing her own daughter in childbirth.
ANARCHA: Black female identifying woman from the past — real person but depicted fictionally as if they are in a modern day documentary. Guardian angel, witness, spirit, present even in absence, with traces of Hazel's personality.
[JOSH/JACQUEZ] Man; 17 to 44 years old; Black, Hispanic.
JACQUEZ: Black male identifying 17 year old, loves fashion, is a gamer an aspiring entrepreneur. He is a loving son and sincere, earnest boyfriend. Trying to play the part of supportive, got-it-together father-to-be but despite projecting confidence, is clueless — but not any more than most young men in similar circumstances.
JOSH: Black male identifying, early 40's. Highly successful in Finance but after being laid off finally feels fulfilled.
SEEKING
more meaning in life, he has the courage (and temerity) to walk away from his career with no plan. He wants to be a supportive partner, but isn't always sure how so can try too hard. Highly educated, witty and when triggered, his kindness makes a sharp turn to sarcasm.[LEILANI/CRYSTAL] Woman; 44 to 49 years old; Black, Hispanic.
LEILANI: Afro-Latina female identifying woman in mid-30's, Aricely's biological mother. Their relationship has been fraught. Leilani has had something of a second life in the past 7-8 years; she's completed an education, started a stable job, married and started a family. Aricley has been invited in, but the fit has not worked and the attempts ring hollow for Aricely, who stayed with her grandma until she died just over a year ago. Very much like her own daughter's personality, but without the bitterness. In the process of forgiving herself.
CRYSTAL: One of approximately 1,400 Black female identifying nurse-midwives in America, mid-40's. A grounded, thoughtful, in-the-moment, people-centered practitioner, but exhausted and overwhelmed by life. This doesn't seep into her work because she's a consummate professional but it's there beneath the surface. Sings a lullaby.
[MADDIE/DR. BONNER] Woman; 35 to 45 years old; White.
MADDIE: White female identifying mid-wife in her mid-30's, excellent practitioner and dedicated to her work. Wanting and needing to be seen as one of the good (white) ones but her overcompensation becomes performative and can harm when she's trying to heal. She's overworked, keeping it together, but barely.
DR. BONNER: White female identifying OB-GYN mid-40's, direct, confident (too confident), by the book, no gray area.
