Preparation
Please prepare EITHER
A) A brief monologue (not to exceed two minutes) OR
B) A brief song (not to exceed two minutes) OR
C) 16 bars of a song and a one-minute monologue.
If singing, bring sheet music; an accompanist is provided all day.

Breakdown
MAMA'S BOY
by Rob Urbinati
Dir: David Saint
1st reh: 9/23/16 Runs 10/18 - 11/6/16
Marguerite Oswald
ROLE IS CAST. Mid-50s, but looks older. She’s as gracious and loving as a grandmother, but also imperious, meddling and defensive. She demands attention, and must be “in charge.” She’s lonely, and craves family, but her behavior makes that difficult. She speaks with a New Orleans lilt.
MARINA OSWALD
Early 20s. A stranger in a strange land, her personality and confidence emerge gradually. She’s learned to rely on others to get what she wants, and craves material things. She can be fiery and opinionated, and her relationship with Lee is passionate and volatile. She speaks with a heavy Russian accent, which gradually softens
ROBERT OSWALD
Mid 20s. A Southern gentleman. He’s reticent, a hard worker, conservative and fair-minded. Long ago, he grew weary of his mother’s antics, and when the play begins, he can barely tolerate her. Although he’s grown apart from Lee, he still has tender, kid brother feelings for him, and is protective of Marina. He can be rigid and ungenerous, and wants to punish his mother. He speaks with a slight southern drawl.
LEE HARVEY OSWALD
Early 20s. Not traditionally handsome like Robert. Lee is close to his mother, and shares many traits with her. He remains polite, even when she tests his patience. Lee is fond of his brother, but questions his values. He adores Marina, and wants to control the relationship, but Marina isn’t easily controlled. Lee is capable of rage, tenderness and vulnerability. He’s intelligent and secretive. He speaks with a slight southern accent.

JERVIS
Male, mid-30’s. An East Coast aristocrat; highly educated, shy, likeable and witty – but with a.dark, lonely side to his character. Tall, good looking with a keen sense of irony. Excellent high baritone/tenor.
JERUSHA
Female, early 20s. A poor girl, brought up in an orphanage. A clever, original thinker; wise beyond her years and lit up from inside by her wicked humor and natural warmth. Very adept at comedy. alto with a pop belt

AMERICAN SON

Kendra Ellis-Connor:
African-American, female, 40s to early 50s. Kendra, a professor of psychology and the mother of a teenage son, is recently separated from her White husband. Is emotionally raw but trying to keep it together behind a professional façade. She is exceptionally intelligent and self-possessed.
Scott Connor:
White, male, late 40s to 50s. Kendra’s estranged husband. Scott is an FBI agent of predominantly Irish ancestry. He takes pride in his family’s long tradition of military service. Though he can be rigid in his views, he has a warm, sensitive side and is a deeply loving and devoted father. Has obvious contained power, but when pushed can explode.
Officer Paul Larkin:
White, male, mid-20s to 30. An intelligent, congenial young police officer with bold career ambitions who lacks actual life experience. While always trying to do the right thing, he often says the wrong thing at the wrong time. His naivety can appear comic at times.
Officer John Stokes:
African-American, male, late 40s-60. A tough, no-nonsense, career police officer who is used to having people listen when he talks. He has paid his dues, knows the rules, and has no hesitation enforcing them.

BAD JEWS

DAPHNA FEYGENBAUM
20s, Jewish. Liam & Jonah’s first cousin. 2/3 body, 1/3 hair. Daphna is very connected to her Jewish heritage. She is highly opinionated and easily let’s her defensiveness turn into aggression towards her opponents. Subtlety is not in her nature. Despite all of her relentless arguing the actor must have the ability to approach it from a sense of humor and wit. Must have strong comedic timing.
MELODY
20s, Very clearly not Jewish. Liam’s girlfriend. She looks like someone who would have been abducted when she was nine but returned to her parents unharmed. Works for a non-profit. Very level-headed, a peacemaker, has a positive outlook on life.
LIAM HABER
20s, Jewish. Daphna’s cousin: his mother is the sister of Daphna’s father. U of Chicago Asian studies PhD student. Former Fulbright scholar in Japan. Has as much of a sense of humor as an overdue library book. Clearly lost his tolerance for Daphna a long time ago and isn’t discreet about the way he feels.
JONAH HABER
20s, Jewish. Liam’s younger brother. Sometime-UVM sophomore. Less lanky than his brother. Less brainy. More brawn. More heart. Sensitive. Doesn’t always speak up but when he does it makes a strong impact.
