BREAKDOWN

MAYBE HAPPY ENDING (Broadway)

SYNOPSIS:
Seoul, Korea, 2064. Oliver and Claire are Helperbots, high-end robots that are nearly identical to humans, designed to alleviate the social isolation of their wealthy owners. Already obsolete, Oliver and Claire now live across the hall from each other in an apartment complex for discarded Helperbots. When a broken charger unexpectedly brings them together, they embark on a journey that challenges what they believe is possible for themselves, relationships, and love.

SEEKING:

[OLIVER]

Character is male (cis, transgender or non-binary), 20s–30s, any ethnicity. Boyish and innocent appearance. A robot, specifically an obsolete Helperbot 3. Despite appearing very human, his emotional levels and physical movements are a bit less gradated than the Helperbot 5. He loves other forms of outdated technology, like LP players and paper maps and books. Optimistic by design, Oliver has always believed his former owner is eventually going to come pick him up from the discarded Helperbot apartment complex. Baritenor who can sing with clarity and simplicity from A2 up to a strong F#4, and extend to G#4 using mix or belt. Facility with straight tone is welcomed, as well as comfort with light mix. Remaining close to written notes and rhythms is highly valued. Great physical control and movement, as well as comic ability.

[CLAIRE]

Character is female (cis, transgender or non-binary), 20s–30s, any ethnicity. Girlish and innocent appearance. A robot, specifically a Helperbot 5. As a model 5, she is capable of slightly more nuanced emotional shadings than the 3. Somewhat impatient with less advanced models. Claire has also forsworn any kind of long-term emotional bond, having observed at close range the broken relationship of the couple that owned her. A voice with clarity down to Ab3 and a clean belt or strong mix to Eb5. Control of mix/head voice up through D5 is essential, and facility with straight tone is welcomed. Remaining close to written notes and rhythms is highly valued. Great physical control and movement, as well as comic ability.

[GIL BRENTLEY]

Character is male (cis, transgender or non-binary), 20s–50s, any ethnicity. A popular American big band leader from the mid 20th century, now remembered by a select few. Gil Brentley was James’ favorite jazz musician, and therefore is Oliver’s as well. Everything Oliver knows about human relationships he learned from Gil’s songs. Sings/croons in the style of a singer of the 1940s–50s (like Frank Sinatra or Nat King Cole). A2 to F#4.

[JAMES/JUNSEO]

Character is male (cis, transgender or nonbinary), 30s–50s, Korean. James is Oliver’s former owner. James was in his late 30s when Oliver began working for him, and in his 40s when Oliver last saw him. Oliver probably remembers him on the younger side. James loves jazz and all sorts of outdated fashions and technology, passions that he has passed on to Oliver. Throughout the show, the actor playing James also plays the various humans that Oliver and Claire encounter in the world. He also plays James’ estranged adult son, Junseo. Bari-tenor who can sing with clarity and simplicity from B2-F4. Piano skills are a plus.
