BREAKDOWN

Seeking:
NOTE: All three actors must be singularly adept with British humour and fearless physical comedy.

BERTIE - male late 20’s - 30’s
Extremely rich, blithely ignorant. A young man of the British Upper Class in the 1930’s. Deals with all situations with a mixture of bonhomie, idiocy and panic. Charming though. He may be singularly clueless, but his wittily inventive turn of phrase often turns the trivial events of his life in to the sublime. Bertie has decided to tell a the story of a recent harrowing experience at Totliegh Towers… His chums at the club told him he’d be awfully good, so he hired a theatre to do it… but now he hasn’t the foggiest idea how to proceed with the evening!

JEEVES - male late 20’s - 40’s
Bertie’s valet. His ‘gentleman’s gentleman’. Commanding, unflappable, sepulchral. Keeps Bertie on the straight and narrow, and always has a plan to get his master out of any scrape. He is extremely strict in the matter of bow-ties and trousering of all kinds. An all-knowing sphinx-like presence, who speaks such good common sense that Bertie can never understand it. It falls to him to play characters in the story from Bertie’s ghastly former fiancé Madeliene Bassett to her angry father.

SEPPINGS - male late 30’s - 50’s
Old. Crabby. Faithful. In his wisdom, Jeeves has also enlisted the old retainer from the household of Bertie’s Aunt Dahlia. A short man, Seppings is also required to do everything necessary to make Bertie’s evening at the theatre go with a swing: he must play Roderick Spode, leader of the fascist British Black Shorts - even though Spode is nearly seven foot in height. Village constables, a somewhat camp butler called Butterfield, and Aunt Dahlia herself are all portrayed with surprising, uncomplaining skill.
