Breakdown

Story/Background: Icebound is the 1922 Pulitzer Prize winner by Owen Davis (The Detour).
In 1922, the Jordan family is one of the oldest and finest families in a Maine farming community. After the death of the matriarch, three grasping and entitled heirs are dismayed and insulted that the family fortune is left to a shrewish second cousin, and bewildered that she should both refuse them any assistance, and yet take on as a farm hand the fourth heir, a prodigal black sheep in the family. She proves a stern task-master; he a resentful but hard working partner. Can a true love be born of a union arranged from beyond the grave, or do our natures defy our highest aspirations?

WOMEN

Jane Crosby
24. Sharp and withdrawn, with iron nerves and a cold exterior. Beneath: a devoted and tender heart waiting for the right sun to draw it forth.

Sadie (Jordan) Fellows
40, a somewhat spiteful widow, seeking in other peoples’ business a satisfaction she cannot find in her own.

Ella Jordan
35-40, restless and dissatisfied with the lot of a small town working woman, whose opportunities may have already passed by.

Emma Jordan
40, self-centered wife to an inconsequential man (Henry), set on claiming the great rewards she deserves and disgusted with all that does not flatter her vision of herself.

Nettie Jordan
19. Blooming and narcissistic, eager to take what the world offers a beautiful girl. Emma’s daughter.

Hannah
50+ ironic, plain-spoken cook and servant on farm. Fed up and devoted, both.

MEN

Ben Jordan
early 30’s. A knockabout prodigal son of a Maine farming family. Cynical and dissolute, but capable of great love and accomplishment.

Henry Jordan
50’s, Resigned and worn down small town businessman, one generation removed from the farm. Past making anything of his talents, whatever they might be.

Judge Bradford
35 - 45, Educated local, returned to the country with a more cosmopolitan air. Tender for those he loves; efficient with those he loathes.

Orin Jordan
10-15. Dull-witted son of self-involved mother (Sadie). Usually in the way, asking the wrong questions, and never given an answer to help him stop. (Likely non-union role.)

Doctor Curtis
60, a country doctor, long enough serving to have been inured to hardship and gentle to those that suffer it. (Likely non-union role.)

Jim Jay
40’s, town sheriff, good natured law man. (Likely non-union role.)
