2017 Selection: HAZARDOUS MATERIALS, by Beth Kander

Description:

The play takes place in one Chicago apartment, in two different eras. In 2015, new co-workers Hal and Cassie are investigating the residence where an elderly Jane Doe just died; in 1955, two strangers, Esther and Lynley, become tentative friends. In alternating scenes, two stories unfold within the same walls: As Hal and Cassie pick through the physical wreckage of a stranger’s life while dealing with their own emotional detritus, Lynley and Esther attempt to connect across very different worlds. With each object or truth unearthed or ignored in each era, one small apartment unfurls as home to timeless human longing.

Characters:

ESTHER—30s, female (1955). Jewish immigrant from Czechoslovakia, mild Czech accent. Her husband died fighting in World War II; the rest of her family died in concentration camps.

LYNLEY—30s, female (1955). African American woman from Alabama. Her husband was an American soldier who died in the Port Chicago munitions disaster in California.

HAL—40s, male (2015). Any ethnicity. New to this job, new to being divorced, feeling very wronged and thereby losing his grasp on right and wrong. Not a bad guy, but this is a desperate point in his life.

CASSIE—30s, female (2015). Any ethnicity. Working class Chicagoan, recovering alcoholic, former military, gruff exterior but kind-hearted with high moral standards.
