By Tearrance Arvelle ChisholmDirected by Betty HartJan. 18 Feb. 10The Aurora Fox Arts Center presents a dark and timely comedy the Washington Post says produces the kind of laughs that have a wow underneath as the characters stride onto dangerous turf. Hooded is an irreverent and darkly-comedic examination of two very different 14-year-old black boys growing up in America. Marquis, a book smart prep-school kid from suburban Maryland meets Tru, a street savvy Baltimorean when they find themselves sharing a jailhouse holding cell, before Marquis' uptight and very white adoptive mother comes to spring them out. Tru thinks Marquis has lost his blackness and pens a manual entitled Being Black for Dummies to help him navigate a world of cheerleaders, Black Lives Matter, 2Pac, Nietzsche, and the Gods Apollo & Dionysus each of whom end up vying for Marquis future. Colorado favorite, and True West Award winner, Betty Hart, directs this exciting and timely regional premiere.
