Within the Walls is the story of what it means to belong and to be forced to surrender everything that binds one’s world together. Performances run at Det. KGL Teater through 17 February.

Despite pressures from the outside world, peace and unity reign within the home of the Jewish Levin family. Everything is as it should be until their young daughter, Esther, falls in love with her Christian teacher, Jørgen Herming, whose father years ago refused to help the Levin family with a loan, simply because they were Jewish. Past animosities are rekindled and the struggle for love and change begins. The father, Adolf Levin, opposes the marriage, but agrees to meet Herming at a dinner where the showdown will take place.

Can the families accommodate the upheaval of change, or will hatred prevail over hope for a better world? Henri Nathansen’s classic is not without reason one of the most-staged Danish dramas. Within the Walls premiered at the Royal Danish Theatre’s Old Stage in 1912 – the very same stage on which the drama is set to unfold yet again.

Don’t miss this star-studded classic with Bodil Jørgensen and Jens Albinus as the Levin couple and Lars Brygman and Stine Stengade as Mr. and Mrs. Herming.

Within the Walls is performed in Danish.

Within the Walls is staged on the occasion of the Royal Danish Theatre’s 275thanniversary and will tour nationwide.
