About this studio
Giwayen Mata is an all-women dance, percussion and vocal ensemble based in Atlanta, Georgia. The name comes from the Hausa language of Nigeria and means elephant women, a term for leaders of women's organizations, and the company describes itself as a multi-generational herd whose work is grounded in the movements, rhythms and songs of the African Diaspora and centred on Black womanhood. Artistic Director Tambra Omiyale Harris, who succeeded founding director Omelika Kuumba, performs as dancer, drummer and vocalist and also founded the Mo' Motion Dance Fitness Camp for Youth with Georgia State University's School of Music.
