BABETTE'S FEAST Adapted for the Stage Promises to Please at Amphibian

Amphibian Stage Productions, the contemporary theatre cultural explorers call home (Kathleen Culebro, Artistic Director; Jay Duffer, Managing Director), proudly presents the Southwest regional premiere of BABETTE'S FEAST as the next production in its celebratory 20th season. The play is based upon the short story of the same title written by Karen Blixen, better known by her pen name, Isak Dinesen. The well-known film adaptation of Dinesen's story won the Oscar for Best Foreign Film in 1988 and is coincidentally among one of Pope Francis' favorite films. The play's adaptation was conceived and developed by Abigail Killeen and adapted by Rose Courtney. BABETTE'S FEAST was originally produced by Portland Stage Company and ran Off-Broadway at the Theatre at St. Clements in NYC in 2018. Amphibian Stage Productions is the first company in the nation to produce the play following its Off-Broadway run.

Babette, a fugitive from the French Revolution, finds asylum among the religiously devout townsfolk of a small and isolated Norwegian village. In an act of deep gratitude, Babette prepares a lavish feast. Yet, her culinary brilliance satisfies more than the suppressed appetites of her pious guests. The extravagant meal soon stirs up the spiritual senses as well and becomes a catalyst for transformative grace within the fractured community.

Amphibian's production of BABETTE'S FEAST is the most ambitious and largest collaborative effort to date in the organization's history. A talented ensemble of 10 local professional actors will transform onstage, playing multiple roles throughout the play. Also, an impressive list of guest artists (both local and national) have been assembled. From guest Scenic Designer, Rusty Jones, to local Costume Designer, LaLonnie Lehman, all will be contributing their talents to the overall design of the production.

Amphibian Stage Productions is a non-profit theatre company founded in 2000 by three alumni of TCU's Department of Theatre who strive to produce innovative and engaging theatre that inspires new ideas, opens new doors, and increases our understanding of the vast world around us. Now launching its twentieth season, Amphibian has produced numerous groundbreaking and challenging plays (some regional premieres, others US or world premieres) that foster a deeper understanding of ourselves as members of the global community. The company is widely recognized for its stylistically and thematically varied scripts.

Committed to nurturing young and diverse audiences, Amphibian has developed a strong internship program, and a dynamic outreach project, Tad-Poles, that is steadily increasing the company's visibility and following. New to Amphibian in 2018 is a multi-faceted outreach program designed for veterans of the US armed forces. The program includes workshops, special performances, and discounted tickets.
